Last night, I installed the .NET Framework 1.1 onto my Windows XP Home SP2 PC. I also has .NET Framweork 2.0 installed before that.

But anyway, when I booted the PC today, I saw a new user account on the welcome screen named "ASP.NET Machine A..." The User Accounts control panel shows it is a password-protected limited account.

What is this user account for? Is it safe to delete?

Thanks.

The ASP.NET Machine Account is a limited-rights user account that ASP.NET server-side applications run under, in an effort to minimize the security threat created by using server-side processing.

On XP Home, it's safe to get rid of this, with one exception: if you disable it, don't plan on using any sort of ASP.NET-capable server that makes use of Microsoft's .NET runtime (as opposed to its own runtime). .NET compiled applications should run fine.

On XP Pro, I think this can cause problems with IIS 5.1, if you have it installed.

If I'm not mistaken, you can recreate the account by running the aspnet_regiis command from your .NET Framework folder (%SystemRoot%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\aspnet_regiis.exe).

I found this ASP.NET Machine Account MACHINE A.... when I was looking at my user accounts. It even has it's own avatar a little yellow race car. That's when I googled it and I found this site. Wheew..I was happy to find it too. I did not know what was going on. I know I have read it is safe..but I am still suspicious about it being in my user account and having the ability to do this without my knowledge.
