In Netscape.com (home page), we noticed a new banner saying "For over 10 years, they programmed the web," then "now it's your turn." We guess that Netscape.com is changing.
Two weeks ago, Joji pointed out an old news (March 2006) that AOL was firing Netscape employees, then there were speculations saying Netscape.com will be changed from it current portal page to a Digg -like user-driven news/aggregation site. (Please see related discussion on this issue.)
The phrases on the banner seems to confirm the speculation. Stay tunes with MozInfo701, we will bring you the latest news when we receive them.
A copy of the banner:

If you ask me, this looks like they're going to take the MSN approach and move their "My Netscape" service directly to the Netscape.com front page.
A Digg.com-like layout is equally as possible, I suppose.

InformationWeek has published new related article today. The story entitled as AOL Relaunches Netscape.com To Challenge Digg and YouTube is located at

Some interesting numers included:

But Netscape.com is more popular than Digg. According to AOL, the Netscape site saw 12.5 million unique visitors in April, compared to Digg's 1.3 million, Del.icio.us' 455,000, and Slashdot's 433,000. It lags behind YouTube.com, however. YouTube claims it receives about 6 million unique visitors per day. |

New York Times reports AOL to Turn Netscape Site Into a Newspaper of Sorts (15 June 2006)
| Quote: | In attempt to revive an aging but still well-known Internet brand, AOL is turning its Netscape.com site into a collection of links to news articles, submitted by users and expanded upon by a staff of bloggers.
AOL's plan to keep and expand that audience was devised by Jason Calacanis, the founder of Weblogs Inc., a collection of blogs that AOL bought last year. Mr. Calacanis proposed that Netscape could combine blogging with the growing popularity of sites that allowed people to share interesting things they found on the Internet with others.
...
Mr. Calacanis has set aside a budget to pay for the Netscape bloggers to travel to news events, often with video crews. He said he hoped that the audience participation would allow Netscape.com to be quick to respond to news events. The bloggers will work on a schedule so that someone is on duty around the clock.
"Not only will we get the story first, we will have the resources to go after it," he said. |
It's also interesting to note the image inserted in the article shows at least 7 PowerBooks/MacBook Pros. The image has caption: The Netscape newsroom. Jason Calacanis, an architect of change at AOL, sits just right of the Netscape logo.

I have to admit... I don't really care for the new format. Granted, I haven't liked Netscape.com in many years but this latest re-incarnation is just too geeky for me. I want a portal with news, weather, business reports, entertainment in an easy to read format. I don't want to vote on stories... don't want to have to click dozens of links. Reading the news is not some sort of silly game (at least for me). So, I'll dump Netscape.com from my bookmarks. It wasn't much to begin with and in my humble opinion, it still isn't.

I had to go to the new page, because I had received some spam in one @netscape.net account, which I want to report. It should have never gone through.
Anyway Mail and My Netscape work as usual.
However, in order to use the newspaper whatever it is, one seem to have to create a new username/password. Forget it!

The new Netscape.com is a Digg.com-like news-discussion blogging styled site. Everybody can submit interesting and important stories, but there will be a dedicated team they selecting stories and feature them on the Anchor Picks section. Like Digg.com, users can vote for their favourite stories.
