The Omni Group has released OmniWeb 5.5 beta 1. OmniWeb 5.5 now based off a slightly customised version of WebKit. This means greatly improved website compatibility, speed and stability. WebKit is the rendering engine powers Apple Safari. On top of that, OmniWeb is now a Universal Binary.

Screenshot of OmniWeb 5.5:

Some interesting features of OmniWeb including the way it organises Tabs and the Site Preferences setting. Unlike most other browsers, OmniWeb organises tabs in a drawer, you can see the screenshot if you want to. The Site Preferences allows users to control each individual site's preferences such as images loading, cookies, JavaScript, ads blocking, ... etc allows users to control security on site bases. We noted this is very similar to Site Control concept introduced in Netscape 8. (Netscape 8 is available for Windows only.)

Screenshot showing tab drawer and Site Preferences:

OmniWeb is priced at US$29.95 and is available from The Omni Group

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X; en-US) AppleWebKit/420+ (KHTML, like Gecko, Safari/420) OmniWeb/v601

Seems like it could be quite a nice browser, but most people will lose interest when they find out . . .

Why pay for an internet browser? All other browsers are free, and so should this one be.

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-GB; rv:1.8.1b1) Gecko/20060710 Firefox/2.0b1

Mozilla = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Microsoft Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

I guess The Omni Group had to survive...

Anyhow, there is an interesting speed test by Macintalk

(browsers: Safari/Webkit 2.0.4, Firefox 1.5.0.4, Camino 1.0.2, and OmniWeb 5.5 Beta 1)

OmniWeb 5.5 Beta 1 is surprisingly the fastest. (Faster than our beloved Safari.)

Also according to that report, it's interesting to note Gecko-based browsers, aka open-source extremists' favourite, (both Firefox and Camino) failed the Acid2 test.

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.8.0.4) Gecko/20060508 Firefox/1.5.0.4
