A report from Top Tech News said that Windows Vista Beta 2 is the buggiest OS.

"I have been testing Microsoft operating systems since Windows 95, and this is the buggiest OS I've seen this late in development," says Joe Wilcox, an analyst with Jupiter Research. "Look at the older operating systems, and by Beta 2 there is a stable foundation on which the [independent software vendors] can build. Right now, Vista is like a ship on stormy seas."

Also according to the report, Vista's memory consumption stands at a staggering 700MB, was just reduced from a full gigabyte. That's about three times the memory requirement of Windows XP system.

And, there's not anti-virus software that works for Vista.
Quote:
"Put the testing aside, I can't find a valid antivirus software that works with it," says Michael Cherry, an analyst with research firm Directions on Microsoft. "That is a key application and runs at a core level. If the antivirus vendors, who work closely with Microsoft, can't get Vista working, then the core is not stable."

Please note, the report may be biased.

Well, it's still Beta. And from what I heard, the newest builds are a lot more stable, faster, and less memory hungry.

Not true. Grisoft fully supports the installation of it's AVG products on Windows Vista, despite the OS still being in beta.

SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

I'm not surprised, since a lot of the code has been reworked from the ground up.

My personal take on Vista Beta 2 is that it's just plain-out way too intensive. When the OS and its preconfigured components take up 512MB of resources on their own, there's a problem. The minimal configuration of Vista Beta 2 that I tried on my other laptop brought the system down to about 150MB used resources; by comparison, a similar configuration of XP takes about half the resources.

Let's not forget that our beloved ( Laughing ) x64 operating systems will natively take up a bit more memory anyway, so Vista64 would be a nightmare.

Windows Vista Pre-RC1 is now available from this page. CD-Keys from the previous public Beta 2 will work. X64 builds are still unavailable at the moment.

It might interest you to know that Vista is no longer so unstable. Wink

"Overall I think Vista is looking very good at this point. ... I think all the worries of Vista slipping went out the window," said Brandon LeBlanc, a writer for LonghornBlogs, via e-mail on Tuesday.

LeBlanc said that Microsoft has made performance and stabilization tweaks that testers requested after Beta 2, and the latest test version of the OS—which could be the final one before Vista is released to manufacturing—is solid enough for regular use. LonghornBlogs can be found here.

"RC1 is quite usable for everyday work, as I am currently doing myself," he said.

I'm going to give RC1 a try once it's made public; if it's as usable as they say it is, I'll keep it.
