Computer giant Apple is recalling 1.8m batteries used in its laptop computers worldwide after overheating complaints.

The announcement affects laptop computers - the iBook G4 and Powerbook G4 - sold between October 2003 and August 2006.

It follows Dell's decision to recall more than 4m batteries from its laptops last week.

The recall does not impact on the company's latest line-up of laptops - the MacBook and MacBook Pro.

The batteries are thought to have been made by Sony, who also supplied similar batteries to Dell.

Apple has said it has received a total of nine complaints so far from users reporting "overheating" of the batteries.

The announcement was made by the United States government's Consumer Product Safety Commission who said two of the nine users reported minor burns from the machines.

In the US, 1.1m machines are affected with a further 700,000 Apple laptops sold overseas also involved in the recall.

Apple has not yet announced the procedure for sending back batteries for users.

The recall is believed to be the second-biggest in US history involving electronics or computers.

That's another good reason you should buy your Apple laptop through SillyDog701 links. Apple responds to safety concern much faster than Dell.

By a margin of about three months, I wouldn't say "much" faster.

Apple has recalled batteries a number of times in the past. This time, only recalling 12-inch iBook G4, 12-inch PowerBook G4 and 15-inch PowerBook G4.

Just to report, the battery for my PowerBook 12" is qualified for replacement.

Bad news for people traveling with Australian airline - Qantas.

APC magazine reports Qantas may expand its restrictions on the use of Apple notebooks on its aircraft, following recent Apple laptop batteries recall.

Quote:
A Qantas spokesman told APC this afternoon that the company was seeking further information on the precise risk posed by the batteries in Apple PowerBooks and iBooks, and whether they posed the same risk as Dell batteries.
“We have put limitations on Dell computers and at this stage we are awaiting further information from Apple,” said the spokesman.
Apple's product recall only covers discontinued models of notebook: iBook and PowerBook. Owners of the company's new flagship model, the MacBook Pro, may face arguments with flight attendants if Qantas does institute restrictions: the MacBook Pro looks exactly the same as a PowerBook.

News from The Mac Observer, Virgin Atlantic bans Apple and Dell laptops, unless they were to be used with in-flight power supply.

Quote:
Virgin Atlantic announced new restrictions on all Apple and Dell laptops Friday, forbidding all laptop battery use in-flight. The carrier will allow Apple and Dell laptops to be used in seats where the computers can be plugged into "In Seat Power Supplies," but batteries must be taken out of the laptops and stowed in carry-on luggage.

I received my replacement on Saturday. It's always good to have new batteries. Smile
