Thanks for reporting.
My friend, Erik, told me that Google Earth crashes after installing Mac OS X 10.4.8 update on his MacBook Pro (Intel-based). Google Earth works fine on his Power Mac G5.

I was just having a quick look at this thread today and I wondered, why is the Intel update a much bigger download file than the PPC update? is there THAT much difference between the two software platforms?

No idea, but the Intel-based version is always a lot bigger than for PowerPC.
OS X 10.4.8 Combo (PowerPC) is 149MB
OS X 10.4.8 Combo (Intel) is 294MB
You might want to blame those unethical people who pirate/distribute/crack Mac OS X (Intel) and trying to run OS X running on non-Apple labelled computer. Those who cracked OS X should be arrested, tortured and hanged. Before hanging, they are required to build their own gallows.

The reason why the Intel updates are always bigger is that while the PowerPC version only contains PowerPC binaries, the Intel updates are universal, since the libraries need both the PPC and Intel versions to work properly with Rosetta.
