Once again, Portable apps has their version out at

Your choice of .exe install or a zip file.
As I mentioned in the RC1 thread, the advantage to this version is it completely leaves your current FF profile alone so you can switch back & forth with no consequences. The concept is actually designed so you can bring all your setting to any pc on a cdr or usb key, but it's also been great for testing.

Exactly, what is the "Portable" thing?

Portable Firefox is just a smaller Firefox distribution that's better suited for flash media. If I'm not mistaken, the only differences are that the chrome is actually in compressed JAR files, and that PF's profile data is stored in the same directory as Firefox itself, rather than in your Application Data folder, which means that your Firefox profile also gets transported along with Firefox.

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.2 x64; en-US; rv:1.8.0.7) Gecko/20060917 Firefox/1.5.0.7 (mmoy CE K8M-X19)

Laptop: Turion 64 X2 @ 2GHz, 2GB PC5300, 100GB HD, Radeon X300, 15" LCD, Vista Ultimate x64
Web server: P2 @ 233MHz, 280MB PC66, 20GB HD, 13.3" LCD, Windows Server 2003 x86
XLink / VPN server: MIPS32 @ 216MHz, 16MB PC100, 4MB flash, DD-WRT v24 SP1 mipsel

Again, to me the benefit on a beta or RC is that the portable version is completely self contained & doesn't impact my FF 1.5.0.7 install in any way. The portable maintains it's own profile in it's main folder & doesn't touch any installed Mozilla folder. No need for complicated profile management when trying a beta, just pop the puppy in it's own folder (mine's on my desktop), import bookmarks & cookies; dl any themes & extensions & it's ready to go. No need to worry about doing something wrong & having to restore my FF profile. If it's buggy, I can just shut it off & start up 1.5. The link in my previous post has a more involved explanation.

And yes, it's original purpose is so a user can take their personal setting with them to a work, friend's or other pc on a USB key or burned on a cdr without leaving a trace. They also offer a portable of FF 1.5 if anyone needs it. P.A. has a few other programs in addition to FF, I haven't tried any of them.

One other thing I forgot to mention above, this is from my similar post in the RC 1 thread,

BTW, for those like me using the portable app version, they've disabled the browser cache to extend USB key life. To enable the cache, go into about:config & change cache size from 0 to 50000.
