19 Oct, 2006 4:34 am Internet Explorer 7 Released [sdp=78538]

Microsoft released Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP and higher operating systems earlier today, which has been hailed as the first update to Internet Explorer since IE6's 2001 release. They've basically summed up the updates in six categories:
Microsoft wrote:

  • Simple is good. A redesigned, streamlined interface gives you more of what you need and less of what you don't. The new look maximizes the area of the screen that displays the webpage.
  • Open multiple websites in one Internet Explorer window with tabbed browsing. See thumbnail images of all open tabs in a single view. Organize multiple tabs into a single tab group and save it as a favorite.
  • Internet Explorer 7 automatically shrinks text for improved printing, so all webpage content fits on your final printed page. Print options also include adjustable margins, customizable page layouts, removable headers and footers, and changeable print space.
  • Tired of looking for the latest news and information on the web? Internet Explorer 7 can deliver the latest updates from your favorite sites to you. Subscribe to RSS feeds through Internet Explorer 7, and get instant access to personalized sports, news, and shopping feeds that keep you up to date on the latest information online.
  • Search the Internet directly from the browser frame using your favorite search provider with the instant search box.
  • Robust new Internet Explorer 7 architecture and improved security features help protect you against malicious software, and help to keep your personal data safe from fraudulent websites and online phishing scams.

Here's the main product page, download links, and release notes.

It appears that the two major issues I had with the earlier IE7 betas has now been cleared up: FTP sites are working from within Windows Explorer again in folder-view (earlier IE7s turned FTP sites into HTML pages), and you can choose to disable ClearType font smoothing on web pages. It still doesn't respect the system's font smoothing settings by default, though.

Since IE7 has been out for over 2 months now, I'm downgrading this thread from Announcement to Normal status.

The new features sound like copied from Firefox or Safari.

And barely hours after Internet Explorer 7 is officially released, the first security vulnerability is reported!

Since IE7 is "new" (certainly not 100% new by a very wide margin), there won't be very many people using
it yet, and this is only a relatively minor vulnerability, there is one thing that has to be said about this . . .

Some things never change!

SD701 Message Centre in IE7 final ... with Menubar and Links bar displayed . . .

IMHO, IE7 still looks bloody awful! That UI might look OK on Vista, but it looks crap in XP!

Thanks DJMG,

Is it possible to ask for a slightly more specified one? The one like this?

(Click for full-size PNG image)

Note: This picture, unlike DJGM's, is not using a non-default toolbar layout, and it's not using a non-official Windows theme Wink

The About dialog can not be opened with the default toolbar layout.

UserAgent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1)

Yes it can, it's just hidden. Go to the toolbar overflow button, then Help, then About Internet Explorer.

I've just noticed that IE7 seems to open up the Language Bar and start two cftmon.exe processes. I can't imagine why it needs language and/or alternative input features.

04 Nov, 2006 4:01 am Absolute Crap!!! [sdp=79143]

I've used this for exactly 2 days and it's absolute crap. The user interface is practically nonexistant and in the course of using it in one session I had over 5 shutdowns and 2 freezes. I finally had to remove it. I am in the process of using Maxthon which I've found superior to not on IE, but also Foxfire, Netscape, and Opera. Has the same interface as IE 6 only easierr to use and control with no shutdowns or freezes. http://www.maxthon.com/features.htm

lovetogarden,

Thanks for sharing with your experience. As for the user interface, I think you will need to "get use to".

Maxthon is a shell riding over Internet Explorer.
