Hello Trinity!

I've moved your thread to here, i specialise in all things Tiny, especially their laptops. Good choice on a Tiny laptop!

I'm not entirely sure you can upgrade this machine as high as 2GHz, the maximum the service manuals say you can go is 950MHz+ for Celeron CPU's, and 1.13GHz for a Pentium III. I'll admit, they're not perfect, but i've managed to get an A360 up to 1.3GHz before.

I'm sure i've discussed this topic before here, have a browse through our KJ Computers section.

Could you post me the entire specs of the machine then i can help you better? If there's anything you're not sure about, i'm here to help.

hi tidus and thanks for your help its much appriciated as my son is a total wizz with computers and i want him to have a decent laptop come xmas morning, so i have bought a second hand one and as far as i know the spec is as follows

celeron 1.0 ghz
30 gig hard drive
256 mb ram

im hoping to get it to at least a 1.3ghz and put extra ram in it to make it 512mb.

Had a few probs with him since me and his dad split so hoping this will get him back on the straight and narrow

many thanks

Hi Trinity!

Your son will like this machine! I've been working with Tiny laptops for a few years now, and i own an A440, the same spec as your sons, i use it for business use, being a company senior executive, i don't need a fast cutting edge machine for work, and this does fine!

You can upgrade the processor to a 1.2 - 1.3GHz, but i recommend you put a Pentium 3 chip in, the Celeron is a budget chip, and struggles with multimedia.

I'm not sure the RAM will go any higher, the official manufacturer, FIC, say in their datasheets that the maximum memory size on the A360 is 256. I have, being a PC technician, managed to get an A360 up to 512, but i don't guarantee it. Some models will go this high, some won't.

You can try it though, and if it doesn't work, blame me, and i'll smack myself! Wink

If you need more help, here i will be! Wink

Yeah, these are standard Pentium III Socket 370 processors. You can use a desktop chip in these machines.

I'm always here for you, if you have any more problems after your son is using it, just ask! Have you actually tested it? Turn it on and run it for about 30 mins, to make sure it is OK, and report anything you think might be wrong back to me, because i know a few Celeron based A440's had problems.

Yeah, i've got a customer on our own company forum (http://kjcomputers.serveftp.net/forum) who has an A460, and her keyboard ribbon cable sometimes catches the fan, making a grinding noise. I posted a solution, but there really is nothing you can permanently do, it is a design fault, my A440 has a heatplate between the fan/heatsink, and the keyboard, so nothing can get near it. The A360 is the A440's little sister, and i think this was one of the areas improved when the A440 was designed.

If you ever do have trouble, i'll help you out!

Firstly, is the sound driver installed? Fire his laptop up, and when the Windows Desktop comes up, right click on the My Computer icon, and click Properties. When the System Properties dialog comes up (it has a picture of a monitor with the Windows icon in, and all the information About the registered owner, and the machines CPU speed, and amount of RAM), click the Hardware tab.

Then click Device Manager. There'll be a list of categories of all the hardware in his laptop, and if any have little exclamation marks in, make a list of them, get back to me, and i'll point you to a driver pack for the A360, and i'll help you install them. Have a look under the Sound and Video game controllers section first, click the little + sign at the side, and let me know what is listed.

Good luck!

Right, Trin, there's a few options left that may be software related, if none of these work, then your sound board has failed, and will need to be replaced.

First off, does the sound work when headphones are plugged in? The speakers themselves may be faulty, i worked on an A360 today that had no sound, and the speaker coils were blown. We checked everything from drivers, to volume, to the sound PCB! The owner does a lot of audio recording, and she had connected a powerful stereo to the Line In, with the volume too high, blowing the diaphragm coils. She was lucky, this should have blown the audio PCB regulators!

Secondly, try downloading your driver pack from our server, HERE

You said you got the laptop from eBay, didn't you? Was the audio not listed as a fault?

Lastly, do as i instructed in my last post, and when you see all those audio devices, double click the VIA AC'97 WDM device, and in this window that pops up, post me all the information from here, especially the Location, it may look like jargon to you, but i can identify an incorrect driver, and/or faulty hardware from this.

It looks as if we don't get a solution, you're going to have to get in touch with the seller, but i'll help you as much as i can, it can be something or nothing.

Good luck!
