Western Australia to have daylight saving trial (3 Dec)

Postby Antony » Tue 21 Nov, 2006 7:15 am

Western Australia will have 3 years of daylight saving trial starting in 12 days (3rd December) this year.

In the past 31 years, WA has rejected daylight saving in three referendums.

After the start of daylight saving on 3rd Dec, only Queensland and Northern Territory are the states without daylight saving.

Antony doubts if Microsoft Windows will have the time right!

Bah. Stupid politicians foisting things on us that no one wants.

In the past 31 years, WA has rejected daylight saving in three referendums.

So why do they think people will want it now?! I now basically start work an hour later because of this. When one already starts work @ 1900 and works into the wee hours of the morning this is not a good thing.

An hour later? Ideally, you should start at the same time (as on your watch/clock), except during daylight saving, you started the day an hour earlier.

Before you complain about Windows getting the time wrong, download the update.

If you are on UNIX platforms, you can update the [tt]tzdata[/tt] file.

You can get a copy of updated [tt]tzdata[/tt] from

ftp://elsie.nci.nih.gov/pub/tzdata2006p.tar.gz

Please note that the current Daylight Saving trial in Perth (WA) is for 3 years. Of course the WA parliament has the power and may decide to either end the trial earlier or make it permanent.

Daylight Savings Time in the U.S. will begin a couple of weeks earlier in March than previous, beginning in 2007 and will end the first weekend in November (later than previous). Then a decision will be made at some point whether to keep this new schedule or revert back to what it was in 2005 (same as 2006).

I hope Windows (if I still use it by then) and Linux will have the correct time once this occurs. Or is this something that NTP takes care of automatically, in the case of Linux?

On Windows you'll need to grab whatever patch Microsoft comes out with, if they don't automatically distribute it over Windows Update. Linux has the option of saving the time in hardware as a GMT time with an offset in software, or you can also save the right time right into hardware, so I guess the method would depend on which you're using. I found this article on Linux time settings if it's of any use to you.

Thanks for the link. On both of my systems (one Windows/Linux dual-boot, the other is Linux only), NTP is installed in Linux and retrieves the time while the operating system is loading in.

Daylight Saving Time - US and Canada

Postby PaulD » Thu 15 Feb, 2007 2:02 am

Microsoft has posted http://support.microsoft.com/gp/cp_dst a series of articles on the changes to Daylight Savings Time in (most states of) the US and Canada. If one digs far enough he will find details on Registry alterations if necessary and desired.

As noted elsewhere, Apple has included the necessary changes in OS X 10. ... Updates. See entries under here.

There is a test page that uses JavaScript to test whether your system is updated for this change, although I do not know what OSs that it works for. The page is:

Just an early reminder, daylight saving time will end on the last Sunday (3.00 am) in March (25th March 2007) in Australia for all states observing daylight saving, and the nation will back to 3 different time zones instead of 5 time zones currently (during daylight saving).

On 25th March this year, Western Australia will conclude its first of the three-year daylight saving trial. After 3 years of daylight saving trials in WA, WA will have a referendum sometime between 10th May 2009 and 13th Sept 2009 to make a final decision. WA has had three daylight saving trials prior to the current one started on 3rd Dec last year.

Who knows, after ten or so more "trials" the politicians will realise that we don't want daylight savings.
