I'm getting an Alert that says "The document contains no data" when going to some internet sites. When I try the sites with IE the sites work fine. I never had this problem with Netscape 7. What is the problem and how do I fix it?

Please give, at least, one example. I don't know why NS8 would misbehave with the Firefox engine, and not with the IE engine. NS7 engine is very similar to the Firefox engine. There is a possibility that the more complex setting of NS8, which gives the option of changing the engine may foul you up. I never use the IE engine in NS8, except to test problems like yours, and, I, thoroughly, dislike the critter,i.e. NS8.

I can't recall the sites that didn't work as I was just surfing around. If I run into one in the near future I'll mark it for reference. I didn't change the engine in NS8 (don't know how yet), I pulled up a separate copy of IE that I have on my PC and that was what worked. As far as liking NS8, I haven't decided yet - I just loaded it a few days ago. The feature I like most so far is the pop-up filter. I have used Netscape products for years and have been comfortable for the most part. I do know I don't like any IE at all and avoid it like the plague because it is the only browser that ever allowed a serious virus into my PC and it has a reputation as a target. I only use it as a last resort when Netscape doesn't work, and I monitor every second while I'm on it with my finger ready to pull the cable if anything starts looking suspicious. I always follow such as session on IE with an immediate scan of the PC. I haven't experimented with any other browser products, so if you have any recommendations please let me know the pros and cons. Thanks for the feedback.

Netscape8.x uses a dual engine, presumably to get around problems that people have with some websites, without exiting the browser. If you go to the Status bar, at bottom left, you will see the Firefox symbol. Otherwise you will see the familiar "e" of IE. The way that NS8.x installs now you must uncheck the box which would make the IE engine your default. You can go back and forth between the two engine by clicking on the ison on the bottom left. You will get a choice of the other engine.

I just started receiving the same message in IE 7 on some sites. Two examples are
www.cnn.com - can't navigate to all articles or section lists
www.aol.com - can't navigate to all articles or channels

The only change I have been able to isolate is a new download parser (MSXML 6.0 parser update). I am wonder if this new parser has made its way onto servers in the field and is causing problems with XML or SQL based site content. The problem seems to be extending to new sites daily for me.

I rolled back the parser on my system but the problem persists.

I've seen this every now and then, but only when clicking a link, this has not occurred with an entire web page.

Agreed, I have only had this problem with links (and I am sure they are xml links). As it turns out, the problem was related to Microsoft Windows XML components for handling XML/XSL:

Free-Threaded XML DOM
XML DOM Document
XML HTTP

I just don't know if it was all client side (I doubt it). I believe this to be a compound problem and here is what I know...

These are add-ons that "run without requiring permission." Most browsers run versions 3 and 4. Service Pack 1 had a problem: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326860

I am wondering if the latest XML parsers have had the bug patched back in or if it was in fact unresolved? In SQL, this will return the message "document has no data" if the xml parser fails on converting the data stream to XML. If it is a transform failure you will receive the message "XML parser failure." I find it interesting that I am having this problem with my hyper-threaded system.

That said, there is also an internet worm going around - it was just upgraded to Level 3:

It may also have been flooding the internet (AOL has been hit hard and just got their network back up yesterday). AOL and CNN rely on huge farms of cache servers (proxy) to feed content (the XML components fail on cached content). Without these online (due to the spam worm) it could be causing "server stress" for the remaining proxies (see above microsoft article) which would more likely cause this failure. (AOL just finished a major upgrade on their network and got hit during the conversion). On sites that most likely don't have cache farms I never had a problem.

In any case, after reinstalling the XML components (4 and 6) most sites began to run yesterday and this morning everything looks back to normal with the remaining problematic sites.

Just a note: the parsers are system level and therefore will affect all browsers that rely on them. Many browser upgrades are incorporating this functionality into the browser engine so it isn't which browser you have but which version you have.

Hi CZ_,

This may sound really dumb, but did you recently update your FlashPlayer, or *any* Adobe update?

I know that for NS 7.x the "npswf32.dll" has caused many problems for users. As far as NS 8.x, I don't know.

Just out of curiositys sake, look in your "plugins" folder and see if you have npswf32.dll. If you do, right-click on it and click Properties, then click Version, then post back and let me know which one you have.

This was not an adobe problem. The sites I had problems with were XML content. The fact that I re-installed XML components and things worked would lead me to believe that it was an XML problem. Though that doesn't mean the message was specific to my problem.

I can easily see where any extraction failure could produce this message.

I'm happy you solved the problem with the XML re-install.

If this ever happens again, you might want to check in Edit | Preferences | Advanced | System under "Windows Should Use Netscape To Open These File Types".

In there is a listing for "XML Documents". If it's unchecked, that may be a part of the problem, also.
