I got a copy of Windows 95 CD from John on Thursday. He was throwing it out, and I said I want it. This disk comes with Windows 95 (B) and Microsoft Plus! as seen in photo above.

Now, I have a problem installing it under Parallels Desktop for Mac. The disc is not bootable. All modern Macs do not have a floppy drive.

According to Parallel Desktop for Mac User Guide, I will need to use an external USB floppy drive or an image file (of the floppy).

Can someone help me on creating a Windows 95B book disk image? In .fdd (created by Parallels Image Tools) or .img or .ima (such as created by WinImage or VMwarer), if you still have a copy of Windows 95B startup disk.

I could send you an image of one of my MS-DOS 7 bootdiscs with CD support, but it'd be a lot easier for you to go download one from Bootdisk.Com or some other source. Since most of those autoextract to a floppy, I suggest you scroll down to "Non-Windows Based Image Files W/ImageApp", download the Windows 98 image, and load the .img file into Parallels, renaming it to .fdd or whatever Parallels wants if necessary. From there, choose to boot with CD support, then run d:\win95\setup.exe.

Ah yes. "The good old days". I have a (then-)top-of-the-line genuine IBM system: Dec. 1995, 200 MHz, 32MB RAM (since upgraded with an additional 16MB salvaged from a scrap Gateway (also Win95)), 3.2GB (factory partitioned 4 ways). Windows 95.950. (Pardon me - this perhaps belongs in the Reminiscences forum. Anyway ---)

The machine still works well for low-demand projects and ain't dead yet by a long shot. A couple of years ago I added a 10/100 NIC card and the machine cooperates well with the 3 XP Pro machines on the home network. The system still has Netscape 4.80, now unuseful. (I could, I know, upgrade it to Netscape 7.) Which brings me to the real point.

What are the last levels of Firefox and Thunderbird that run on Windows 95? And where can I get them? Sillydog has Netscape archives, but I haven't been able to locate any FF/TB Archive. Does it exist? If not, would there be any utility in having one?

I did at one time install the first Firefox 2.0 RC, and it ran fine. An attempt to install Thunderbird gave the false-negative error that there was not enough disk space. When Firefox 2.0 Final came out I uninstalled the RC (and unfortunately had already deleted the download.EXE), and sadly found that the Win95 door had been barred now also for FF. It would be nice to have useful internet access for those times when I'm using that system and need to research something. Resources aren't the constraint, interfacing is.

I did the manual (a virtual wizard?) definitions to add the computer to the (then hub, now router) home workgroup. If that is what you want I can extract the pertinent information and post it. A domain definition I haven't delved into. I won't try to get screen shots.

Firefox 2.0 runs on Win95, I think, as long as you install all available MS updates. Also, http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases and http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/releases <- You can find any old version in here.

I still have a computer that can boot into DOS 6.22 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11 (or something like that). It still worked a few months ago when I tried it then. The system has a CPU that runs at a blistering 266 MHz. The default boot up is into Windows 98SE.

The Windows 98 side connects to my own LAN without trouble, but I do not believe that the Windows 3.11 side is network aware.

I would expect that Windows 95 could network as well as Windows 98 does. Perhaps a Google search would help Antony out in that regard.

I don't have a 98 system to experiment with, but yes, 95 works fine in a Workgroup. See last paragraph. One minor Share-ing glitch that I hit: 95 will not recognize a XP (NT-family?) shared folder that has a hyphen in it's name.

Can you tell me the list of network components you have installed (under Control Panel > Network > Configuration)?

I think I found the problem:





Realtek RTL8029 (Network card) is the one Parallels Desktop emulates, and Parallels provides a driver (for all versions of Windows). It seems like the Windows 95 driver does not work. (Even if I download the RTL8029 driver from the net, it still does not work.)

There are some reports of Windows 95 unable to go online in Parallels forums all without solution. I will report to Parallels.

My apologies for the delay in replying. My adapter is a different model.

Here are the complete specifications on my 1995 IBM PC NIC. The system came with a 28.8 dial-up modem, later bumped up to 33.6 via a driver update released in '96. I bought an inexpensive ethernet adapter about three years ago and connected the Windows 95 machine to a XP Pro system through a hub. (Later 2 additional XP Pro laptops were added.) I initially had hard IP addresses set all around, but backed those out when last November I finally got a DSL line and a router (hence DHCP support).

Some of these don't apply to your question, but are included for completeness.
