Netscape 8.1.3 available for download

Thanks to Joji, Netsape 8.1.3 is now available for download from Netscape's FTP server (and SillyDog701's mirror).

According to one of the discussion threads in Netscape's Message Board, Netscape 8.1.3 is scheduled to be released on 1st April. The file is now available on Netscape's FTP server, but Netscape has not yet made the announcement (at time of posting).

No release notes at time of posting, but it is believed to be a security maintenance.

Netscape 8.1.3 is based on Gecko rv 1.7.5 (20070321).

The Security Alerts page states that version 8.1.3 includes nine security fixes. They are MFSA 2006-57... MFSA 2006-67 (Mozilla Foundation Security Advisory), but 58 and 63 are not included.

Richard,
some people are attached to the name"Netscape" and will not use anything else.
There is no reason that I can think of using 8.1.3. It is nearly as bad as its predecessor.
NS9 appears to me more like a branded Firefox, and it may be usable.
I am, just, doing the last spyware scan with 8.1.3, before uninstalling it.
1.Bookmarks drag and drop still take forever
2.Spyware blacklist definitions still get lost.

This is new stuff.

The special things about Netscape 8 are: 1) ability to use IE engine, 2) comes with some security add-ons (however, not good reviews in my opinion.)

1. In FF and SM, we have IETab so that is a non-issue
2. All that security stuff is, in my mind, bloat, when I sit behind a software firewall, behind a hardware firewall, with Norton AV on two machines, ZoneAlarm AV in two machines.

And, if I did it right, this will be the first time I used the quote thing.

Last I checked FF didn't have an integrated IE functionality and speaking of bloatware, both of those apps you list are imo a waste. Windows built-in firewall has been the best thing since sliced bread ever since the SP2 update several years ago, there hasn't been a need for me to depend on a 3rd party since.
Norton AV is garbage bloatware antivirus it too usually bundled with a firewall. If you want a good antivirus, download Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic it doesn't cost a dime.

Now, with two new Vista machines and a Linksys router, I am also using the Windows Firewall. Both Norton and ZA were too restrictive when my friend the software engineer helped me set up a network.

You know, I am not big on free software. I am never feeling secure about what else they are doing beyond what I can see.

I was stuck with Norton on the Vista machines. I only use the AV, it seems a lot better than the older editions I had. I still have the XP machines about which I was writing when you say my post. There I am also using the Windows firewall for the same reasonas above. I am using ZA's AV, which these days is really Kapersky. I took it because they sold it unbundled for under $20.00.

Anyway, welcome to SillyDog, the best kick-ass forum on the internet. I have gotten more help here than anywhere. Don't forget we have a Windows forum and a Mac forum. It's not just browsers.

I'm with you, Richard. While I'm sure there are some bargains out there, I'm also a believer that you pretty much get what you pay for. And given the fact that there is so much identity theft and hacking in this day and age, spending a few bucks to protect myself while I am online seems only prudent. Geeze... I bought BitDefender, a top-notch AV, for my wife and myself for two years/two licenses for $40.... that's essentially $10 per year... a great bargain in my book.

I also agree that ZA is not the same as what it once was. Scott Finnie (you can Google him) has a great techie website. Right now he has been doing a year-long test of software firewalls. ZA free is almost useless, according to his tests and several to which he refers. Since I have Sunbelt's CounterSpy, I purchased their firewall (the former Kerio firewall). But there is little wrong with the Windows firewall.

And speaking of spyware, I've read that this is becoming of greater to many security experts than viruses. I'm using CounterSpy, Ad-aware, Spyware Blaster and Spybot S&D. I figure you just can't be too careful in this.

So, while I do use "some" free programs" (Ad-aware, Spyware Blaster and Spybot), I pay for my firewall, my AV and my main anti-spyware. I don't mean this to be a pattern for everyone. For me, it gives me the feeling that I'm reasonably protected as long as I use common sense while surfing and reading my e-mail.
