Google officially unveiled a Mac version of Google Desktop. Google Desktop is a desktop search application that gives you easy access to information on your Mac and from the web. Google Desktop enables users to search their own email, files, music, photos, and more as easy as searching the web with Google.

Google Desktop for Mac is Universal Binary, allowing it to run natively on PowerPC and Intel-based Macs, searches file contents and metadata, recognizes Spotlight plug-ins so it can search for the same information that Tiger's built-in search feature does, maintains a searchable Web history, and takes snapshots of text documents so they can be recovered if accidentally deleted.

Google Desktop for Mac current in public beta and is free. It can be downloaded at the Google Desktop web site. We recommend users carefully read the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy before installing.

I know most people don't bother to read the Terms of Service/EULA at all, I thought it would be a good idea I bring it out here.

Google Desktop for Mac Terms of Service wrote:
2. PRIVACY POLICY
Protecting users' privacy is very important to Google and the Third Parties. As a condition of downloading and using the Software, you agree to the terms of the Google Pack Privacy Policy at http://pack.google.com/intl/en/policy_info.html, which may be updated from time to time and without notice. Information collected by Google or Third Parties in connection with your use of the Software may be stored and processed in the United States or any other country in which Google, its agents, the Third Parties or their agents maintain facilities. Accordingly, by using the Software you consent to any transfer of such information outside of your country. You acknowledge and agree that Google and/or Third Parties may access, preserve, and disclose your account information if required to do so by law or in a good faith belief that such access preservation or disclosure is reasonably necessary to: (a) satisfy any applicable law, regulation, legal process or governmental request, (b) enforce these Terms and Conditions, including investigation of potential violations hereof, (c) detect, prevent, or otherwise address fraud, security or technical issues (including, without limitation, the filtering of spam), (d) respond to user support requests, or (e) protect the rights, property or safety of Google, its users, Third Parties, their users, and the public. Neither Google nor any Third Party will be responsible or liable for the exercise or non-exercise of rights under these Terms and Conditions.

In plain words, users have to allow Google and third parties to collect and store (unspecified) information.

Google Desktop for Mac requires Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) or later, which has Spotlight built-in. And Spotlight in Leopard will continue to expand the current Spotlight in Tiger.

By installing a third party software for some 'additional' search function is simply opening the information in your computer to US companies.
