05 Jun, 2007 8:22 am new MacBook Pro: faster, lighter and LED backlit [sdp=85106]

Apple today unveiled its new MacBook Pro lineup with thinner, lighter models thanks to new LED backlit displays. The new MacBook Pros come with Core 2 Duo processors at up to 2.4GHz, up to 4GB of RAM, and higher performance graphics in a stunning, lightweight, aluminum enclosure that’s just one-inch thin. Available in 15-inch models with a new mercury-free, power-efficient LED-backlit display and a 17-inch model with an optional high-resolution display (HD), the new MacBook Pro includes a built-in iSight video camera, Apple’s MagSafe Power Adapter, and built-in 802.11n wireless networking.

Pricing remains the same for the three configurations, at US$1,999, US$2,499, and US$2,799, but numerous specifications have been upgraded. All models now come standard with 2GB of RAM, an 8x dual-layer SuperDrive, and an NVIDIA 8600M GT graphics card.

The new 15-inch MacBook Pro features environment friendly LED (light emitting diodes) backlit, and the machine weighs 0.2 pounds lighter. The new 17-inch MacBook Pro can be upgraded to 1920-by-1200 resolution (build-to-order) for merely US$100 more. 1920-by-1200 pixels is enough to display 1080i HD resolution without scaling. For more detail on MacBook Pro's graphic display, please refer to MacBook Pro - Graphics web page.

With the speed bump in MacBook today, MacBook Pro can now be configured with an optional 2.6GHz Core 2 Duo (US$250 premium over 2.4GHz model). Not available on 2.2 model.

I'd be personally interested to see whether or not the LED-backlit display offsets the 8600's power consumption when it comes to battery life, in comparison with the previous model's fluorescent backlighting and X1600 GPU.
