Well hey my name is chris and have a problem that is not as technical as the rest.. i am currently doing my A-levels and am studying resistant materials. as part of my research i have to design a new product and have chosen to do my project on on Laptops an intend to design a newdevice/or component to ease the use of a laptop.

I have had some negative reply's from other forums saying that his i cheating but i assure you that asking for stimulus is far fom cheating and in this project is highly encouraged.

So i am askin for some general everyday problems tht youwould like to be righted once an for all of your laptop.. no mattr how basic/imaginative/technical or impossible it ma seem..

IMHO, what you're doing is far from cheating. The first step in any invention is analytical - figuring out what the user needs, and that's what you're doing.

The PC I use every day is a laptop, so I might have some valuable input for you if you're intrested. One of the greatest problems I have with mine (a Compaq nx6325) is heat. I'm not referencing the core temperature (roughly 40°C when idling and near 75°C when under heavy use, so it is a problem nonetheless), what I mean is the heat of the box itself as a whole.

Let's say, I'm multitasking, and encoding live TV for later viewing while I'm also typing an e-mail. Since the CPU has a rather large load, the case heats up. Most of the heat is vented out the left side via a rather noisy fan, though a still-considerable amount can start to get annoying where I'd usually put my hands (here, if a reference picture would help). To say the least, on a hot day it can get a bit annoying.

I've looked in advance into my currently-existing options. Underclocking the CPU, though it would reduce the temperature, isn't practical: if I were to do that, I might as well have purchased my laptop for $250 less given the smallest possible decrement. There are cooling 'mats' that can be placed underneath the laptop, though these seem like they would only be effective internally rather than at the surface. I'd rather not have to wear insulated gloves as a solution, either.

You are "studying resistant materials".

What kind of resistance are you focusing on: heat, electrical(static?), deformation/breakage, ...?

in anwser to the last post i am still in a very wide design solution stage and am not limiting myself to any problem... the problem can be far and wide from heat to flying carpets... im just really asking for first of all problems and then if someone has a problem i may be able to fix then if they could be my contactable client throughout the project...

and in awnser to don then yes i have also found heat as aa big problem on my laptop but only solutions really are pads or ventilation which i may be able t mix in with my final design...

So Don do you often use your laptop out and about or just around the house..?? if u do where do u use it do u find problems in transporting it aandne problems when u are there???

well i have done some basic design ideas at the mo and all are pretty simple but things like z stands and etc but i am looking more now at specific components... like lighting?? or sound?? etc??
