I got this link from a post in a SeaMonkey forum over at Mozillazine, in SeaMonkey General.
This is pretty big news. The article contains a link to the Chief Wrangler's blog, so it is not an April Fools joke.

I read the mozillazine.org blogs, etc. ,and I have seen some interesting ideas. And, a lot of nonsense. A threat because the name is long, and there is a "th"?
I have, almost accepted the idea of the independent browser and mail clients, and they come up with this? I like the name Googlefox mentioned in one of the posts. I guess that we will see it soon!
By the way, people having been bent of shape because AOL "killed" Netscape, when Netscape was no more than a branded Mozilla. I guess Netscape Mercury is getting more interesting by the minute, but when will it be killed?

Hmm. I read about this on fxextensionguru's blog. Big news.
I wonder what they're gonna do with it.

Thanks to profman.
Fulvio,
TBird will not die. It is too good. I do not use it, but I need it for a short period of time while my Outlook program was in rehab.
As an email program to compete with Outlook Express in Windows, it is excellent, easy and speedy. It will never ever compete in its present form with Outlook in Office, which has many features beyond email.
The mail being developed by Netscape, along with some new iteration of Eudora are or were to be based on TBird. I believe that they will still be based on TBird.
I suggested over at the Netscape forum that maybe Netscape should try to attract the TBird people. After all, it is basically volunteer. It would be a good grab for them, the way the Braves grabbed Jose Valentin when the Mets put him on assignment.

There are some related articles:
The Open Web and Firefox Focus (mitchell's blog, 26 April 2007, Mozilla Corporation CEO Mitchell Baker)
Email Call to Action (mitchell's blog, 25 July 2007, Mozilla Corporation CEO Mitchell Baker)
Mozilla Thunderbird to Find New Home as Mozilla Foundation Focuses on Mozilla Firefox (MozillaZine, 26th July 2007)
To summarise the situation...
Mozilla Corp and Mozilla Foundation focus on Firefox project rather than Thunderbird, and will continue to be this way. Thunderbird needs a new home to survive.
Mitchell Baker laid out three possible fates for Thunderbird:- create a new non-profit organisation (similar to the Mozilla Foundation) to focus on the Thunderbird;
- build a new subsidiary of the foundation just for Thunderbird;
- making Thunderbird as a community-only project, this is similar to SeaMonkey project.

I looked at the blog, and, more importantly, the comments to the blog. I do not understand all the people commenting about TBird vis Exchange. First, no one in the corporate world talks about Exchange. Exchange is that thing that lives on a server somewhere. What we all use is Outlook, part of Office, which we all use. They are the apps in the corporate world ( the legal world uses Corel's Word Perfect due to age old formatting). That will not change.
TBird is nothing like Outlook.
It is a great competitor for Outlook Express, part of Windows.

And if the company uses Exchange, it is less likely that the employees would use Thunderbird.
BTW, I thought the main reason that layers and legal uses Corel Word Perfect is due to the fact that Word Perfect can handle lengthy documents much smoother than MS Word, as well as the ability to see the formatting codes applied to the document. I could be wrong on this.

Yes, Antony, that is what I meant by age old formatting.

I also wish to add, everything that I said about TBird vs Outlook is absolutely untrue about FF and IE.
I use FF all over the corporate/industrial/financial complex. Chase, GE, Siemens,Emerson Process Management, Alfa Lava, Ametek, Altair Filter Tech , Merrill Lynch.
There is no web site that I have contact with that fails on FF.
FF is right this minute worthy of the above noted complex, and hurrah and huzzah for that!!

Vaughn has an interesting theory. In his theory, Google sponsored Mozilla Foundation/Corporation, and getting rid of Thunderbird can drive people to use Google's Gmail instead.
Vaughn (posted to Mitchell's blog on July 26, 2007 9:59 AM) wrote: | I have a theory about why Mozilla Foundation may be getting rid of Thuderbird. Here it is:
Since Google is a primary funder of the Mozilla Foundation, and since Google is actively developing and offering their own enterprise grade email ecosystem via gmail and google apps, maybe they are wanting to kill off or hinder the development of Thunderbird to “encourage” those wanting to ditch the Outlook/Exchange Juggernaut to move to Google, instead of utilizing a Thunderbird and Lightning integrate application with an open source groupware backend.
You know, in general, corporate funders of not-for-profits have ulterior motives, so this is a reasonable theory for why cutting Thunderbird from the Mozilla Foundation “makes sense” all of a sudden. |

But what is the concrete manifestation of Google's support?

Greetings,
Web based e-mail is fine, but what about backups, and multiple e-mail accounts?
I've heard horror stories of users loosing all their Web based e-mail because of a glitch in GMail or other Web based e-mail services.
I like the fact that I can download my e-mail from my ISP account, GMail, etc. to my local computer and then be able to back it up.
Thunderbird allows you to access multiple e-mail accounts using just one application.
I don't think that only Web based e-mail will ever work for me.
FYI,
Thunderbird must go says Mozilla CEO

Will Penelope be the death of Thunderbird?

I don't think so. It will be the TB of the future, as Qualcomm has stopped selling it v.7.x Eudora. I am using Eudora8.0b1 with an old Thunderbird profile, and, except for the difference in the toolbars, there is no difference in performance.
I don't care what they callit. I am ready to change.

I'm ready for the change as well...with one question. Is the newsreader the same? From what I can see... it is not completely identical. I see some differences. For instance, when I follow a thread, replies do not contain the originally quoted posts. My settings are the same as they were with T-bird so I'm wondering if there is something different about the Eudora newsreader. Anyone?
