Wow, new brushed metal iMacs . 20" and 24", up to 2.8GHz Core 2 Extreme CPUs. 1GB memory standard across the board, with 2GB in the high end model. The graphics are a bit slow though, look at the reviews of the Radeon 2400/2600 and you'll see what I mean.
Overall, this looks like a nice upgrade.
Prices are (in USD) are starting at $1199 for the 2Ghz/20" model with 1GB ram, 320GB HDD and Radeon 2400 graphics.

I can't believe they actually went through with that weird-looking keyboard... the iMac itself looks pretty cool though.

It is worth metion that the new iMacs sporting the "glossy widescreen display", as Apple first introduced in MacBook in May 2006 , later MacBook Pro has the option of it.
Some might not like the reflectiveness of the glossy display, glossy display does make the black more black, and easier to read in sunny environment (e.g. outdoor).

Primate Labs has a performance report on the new 24-inch iMac (Aug 2007) vs pervious 24-inch iMacs (late 2006).
24-inch iMac (Aug 2007):
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.40GHz
24-inch iMac (Late 2006):
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.33GHz (BTO model)
24-inch iMac (Late 2006):
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.16GHz
All machines are 2GB 667Mhz DDR2 SDRAM.
The overall performance:
24-inch iMac (Aug 2007, 2.40GHz): 3243
24-inch iMac (Late 2006, 2.33GHz): 3049
24-inch iMac (Late 2006, 2.16GHz): 2898
(baseline: 1000 for Power Mac G5 1.6GHz)
| Quote: | The latest 24-inch iMacs have two major advantages over the older 24-inch iMacs; they have faster processors, and they use the new Santa Rosa chipset (instead of the Napa chipset used in the older 24-inch iMacs).
The faster processor helps increase both integer and floating point performance, while the faster front-side bus on the Santa Rosa chipset helps increase both memory and stream performance. |
Detail at 24-inch iMac Performance (August 2007)
As you might have known, my 24-inch iMac (2.33GHz) is now superseded. However, it is still 2 times better than the first (entry level) Power Mac G5 on performance.

The new iMac wins PC Magazine Editors’ Choice award
Calling the new iMac a “design benchmark for the industry”, Joel Santo Domingo (PC Magazine) remarks, “Its aluminum and black appearance can work in the home, next to your iPhone, or in the office next to your Aeron chair.” He adds that the new iMac with iLife ’08 “is a perfect choice for managing and enjoying your digital life (photos, music, movies, and more). No other software suite is so integrated, making it dead simple to use your digital music and photos in your video projects”. Domingo concludes, “The newest iMac proves you can buy a computer that makes few compromises on design and performance.
