Apple has updated Boot Camp to version 1.4 beta. Significant bug fixes have been made to the following technologies in this release: Boot Camp control panel, Keyboard support, Windows drivers, Localisation, and Support for the latest Mac models.
Boot Camp is Apple's solution for installing and running Windows on Mac, allowing owners of Intel-based Macs to install and boot Windows XP alongside Mac OS X. Unlike virtualisation solutions (e.g. Parallels Desktop, VMware Fusion), Apple's solution requires users to reboot machines to switch from one operating system to another.
Boot Camp was originally released on 5th April 2006 , and the final version is expected in Mac OS X 10.5 "Leopard" later in 2007.
| Quote: | Boot Camp 1.4 beta includes:
- Support for keyboard backlighting (MacBook Pro only)
- Apple Remote pairing
- Updated graphics drivers
- Improved Boot Camp driver installer
- Improved international keyboard support
- Localization fixes
- Updated Windows Help for Boot Camp
 |
(it seems to be same as Boot Camp 1.3 beta )
Installation of Vista requires a full version of Vista, not an upgrade: Vista Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, or Ultimate and at least Mac OS X 10.4.6.
Also, if you have previous Boot Camp installed, you don't need re-partition Windows.
| Quote: | Updating to Boot Camp 1.4 beta
If you previously installed Boot Camp beta, you can easily update to Boot Camp 1.4 beta. You don't need to partition your hard drive again (unless you want to change its size) or reinstall your Macintosh and Windows software or documents, but it's very important to update the Boot Camp Assistant software, create a new Mac Drivers CD and install the updated software it contains onto Windows. Complete instructions are provided in the Installation and Setup Guide included with the Boot Camp 1.4 beta software. |
Boot Camp 1.4 beta requires Mac OS X 10.4.6 or later, the latet EFI Boot ROM and SMC firmware updates, at least 10GB free hard disk space, and of course, an Intel-based Mac.
Supported Windows versions are:
| Quote: | A bona fide full, 32-bit, single-disc version of Microsoft Windows: Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2, Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2, Windows Vista Home Basic, Windows Vista Home Premium, Windows Vista Business, or Windows Vista Ultimate. |
For more information about Boot Camp, please visit Boot Camp (Apple Boot Camp page).
Boot Camp 1.4 beta is 347MB download. It is free.

Still, Boot Camp 1.4 beta only supports 32-bit versions of Windows.

If I'm not mistaken, Microsoft has confirmed EFI support for the x64 versions of Windows Vista in Service Pack 1. So if all goes well, you should be able to run Vista on a Mac without Boot Camp.
As for the 32-bit editions, I assume you'll still need Boot Camp for those.

Actually, you can already run x64 versions of Windows on Intel Macs (64-bit), you'll just have to go driver hunting.

Boot Camp is a partitioning tool and a set of drivers. You don't actually need it to run windows, but it helps.
