16 Aug, 2007 2:59 pm Beware: Navigator9.0b3 is out [sdp=86789]

My settings were to ak me what to do, but b3 started downloading the entire file.
At least, it listened to me when I chose to restart 9.0b2 later.
The Netscape page alleges full extention compatibility with Firefox2 something (unspecified).
I have had MediaPlayerConnectivity forever, and ColorfulTabs for quite a while, but they were declared incompatible. No problem thanks to NightTesterTools.
Just enough to be annoying.

Thanks for informing us, Fulvio.

This is the first Netscape 9.0 Beta I've ever installed myself. My quick impression so far is positive.

I said Beware because Antony had been indignant when Firefox did exactly that, i.e. updating and installing itself. I, never, had the problem exhibited by NS9b3, which went on to download itself, while I was doing something else. I could not do anything while it was downloading the entire file, and then the installation occurred on startup.
I was never asked what to do, as my settings were.

Firefox themes do not work.. I tried installing them but I get a incompatibility error..
Is there a way to fix it? Is there a patch that will fix it?

It's beta, guys. You have to recognize that it's just not going to work the way a final release will.

I am using Nightly Tester Tools as aid to avoid compatibility checks. It has worked pretty well.
Some addons have given me errors, but nothing that I could not operate.
As James said, it is still beta, and, the developers are managing to mess up, sometimes.
As for Addons, contrary to what is, genrally, thought, it is not up to the program to make the Addons compatible., but the other way around.
Still, I, and others who have had Addons installed, have had reports that the Addon was not compatible (I got four out of eight treated that way). I just ignored that, and the Addons worked. At this point, they are still messing with the Firefox base, and some problems do crop up.

Gee willikers,

Hey, you guys, how is everyone?

I did the update on all four computers, which no problems. I just started .09beta2, nothing happened, I went to check for updates, I found the update, it took about 20 seconds. I think that I did need to re-start the browser in each case, but that was it. I don't have much in the way of extensions, just IETab and Colorful Tabs.

Some of the new NN9 function means new theme resources are needed to support the new toolbar & statusbar icons, sidebars, etc. Hence Firefox 2 themes need some modifications to support NN9, they rarely seem to work otherwise....

You can find a selection that do work with the NN9 betas here.

Note: these themes currently use the default NN9 beta theme versions of the new resources

Some FF extensions support Netscape 8, and hence have a Maximum Supported Version for Netscape of 8.1.2 or 8.1.3 etc.
In this situation, as NN9 uses the same ID as NS8, the extension fails the Netscape Version Check. This is unfortunately necessary, as the extension may only be designed to work with NS8. (i.e. an FF 1.0.x based extension)

If however, a FF2 extension has never supported NS8, it has no ID entry for NS8/NN9, and in this case NN9 allows it to install.
i.e. NN9 overrides the problem caused by this missing ID section.

So, if you get an extension install error, use an extension that allows you to override the problem, but also e-mail the extension author and request NN9 support, with enough requests, hopefully we can all benefit.

If you may, take a look at the extention compatibility thread at ufaq.org.
Briefly, although some extentions may be called incompatible, they work fine. Maybe the developers have to refine this point. However, I found that the Forecastfox extention was giving me errors, no matter what. Jay Garcia made some changes in the extention, and I still got errors. Finally, after removing any Forecastfox extention, I launch a search and destroy mission, which yielded several lines of Forecastfox in files like localstore.rdf (unexpected), or prefs.js (expected). After editing everything, the extention was installed.

(Chuckle) Just a suggestion: Don't go experimenting with experimental softwares (betas and alphas) on your primary machine if you've got an old secondary machine booted up somewhere in the house ...

There is nothing wrong with beta software (usually). and, I have tried all sort of stuff with no damage.
Your suggestion is reasonable if you have a secondary machine, in first place, or, at least hooked up to the Internet. It costs more to have two machines hooked up, also, you know.
