Apple announced a new iPod family today with new iPod nano, iPod classic and a new iPhone-like iPod touch.

The new iPod nano brings video playback into nano family, it features Cover Flow for navigating. iPod nano comes with 2-inch colour display (320x240 pixels). iPod nano is available in 4GB and 8GB capacity and in silver, black, blue, green and a (PRODUCT) RED special edition.

If you have a huge music library, or you want a stylish portable storage with you, the new iPod classic is the answer. Featuring 80GB or 160GB of storage, enough to hold up to 40,000 songs, 200 hours of video. The new iPod classic features a 2.5-inch colour display (320x240 pixels) featuring Cover Flow and a new all-metal enclosure. The shape is similar to iPod 4-gen (clickwheel).

If iPhone is not available in your country, you can get the iPhone-like iPod touch, featuring Apple's revolutionary multi-touch user interface. It looks like an iPhone in 8mm thin without the phone feature. The iPod touch comes with a 3.5-inch widescreen display and built-in Wi-Fi wireless networking. Like iPhone, iPod touch has a built-in accelerometer that automatically senses when you rotate it into its landscape position. When you’re in music, it automatically switches to Cover Flow™ so you can browse your music collection by album cover artwork with just a flick of a finger. When in Photos, it automatically displays the photo in its landscape aspect ratio; and when in Safari it displays the web page horizontally. iPod touch also has a built-in ambient light sensor that automatically adjusts the display’s brightness.

The new iPod nano is available today, priced at US$149 for 4GB iPod nano silver, and US$199 for 8GB model available in silver, black, blue, green and a (PRODUCT) RED special edition.

The new iPod classic is available immediately worldwide in silver and black. The 80GB iPod classic model is US$249 and the 160GB iPod classic is US$349.

The new iPod touch is scheduled to be available later this month. The 8GB iPod touch model is priced at US$299 and the 16GB iPod model is US$399.

Visited two computer shops today, and I am surprised to note that they both have new iPod shuffles, iPod nanos, and iPod classics in stock. Taken today is a special holiday in NSW - APEC Holiday.

Apple has posted iPod nano and iPod classic updates to version 1.0.2 via iTunes.

Apple does not provide detailed descriptions on those updates.
