06 Sep, 2007 5:00 am Eudora 8.0.0b1 released (with Penelope Extension) |
[sdp=87055] |
|
As mentioned in last October , Eudora would become open source, and the new version of Eudora would be based on Mozilla Thunderbird. On 30th August, Qualcomm (Eudora) released the first beta - Eudora 8.0.0b1 for Mac and Windows platforms.
Eudora 8.0.0b1 also includes Penelope Extensions version 0.1a21. Penelope is a Thunderbird extension bringing Eudora user experience to Mozilla platform.
Eudora 8.0.0b1 can be downloaded from this page .

I have the Penelope extention in my TB. It adds a number of useful buttons, but removes the Junk button. In, almost, every way, my TB looks like Eudora.

I've downloaded it and giving it a try. So far... looks pretty good. Thanks for the heads-up.

Unbelievable! I may have missed something, but when Eudora opened it looked exactly the same as Thunderbird2.0.0.6 with Penelope. All my accounts were there, as well as the very unusual Theme. The only difference is that I was given a box with e-mail checked .
When I went back to TB2.0.0.6 I found that it was still the default mail, but I could not get any of my IMAP accounts, which I could a couple of hours ago. But, after I checked my stored passwords, the IMAP accounts started working fine.
At this point, I don't know if having Eudora will really be helpful, or will created problems.
I double checked, and Eudora uses my Thunderbird2.0.0.6 profile, no question asked.
The IMAP accounts' passwords were there, but Eudora did not seem to believe me. I deleted and added them again. Other than a couple of links in All Users, there is no trace of Eudora in Documents and Settings. I am not complaining, because I have nine accounts more or less ready to go, but Eudora is TB2.0.0.6 with Penelope. I would not be able to tell them apart, except for the Help|About...
Interestingly, I am using the profile manager switch, i.e. -p to select the profile for TB2.x, out of four possible profiles. But, Eudora goes for the right on, immediately.

Definitely, Eudora uses the same profile as Thunderbird2.0.0.6. Mail deleted in Eudora is deleted in Thunderbird.
I will check if it is possible to have Eudora use a different profile, without making a mess.
But, as TB will not be maintained by the Mozilla Corp, it is not unreasonable that Eudora and TB would be identical.

I like the search features that Eudora brought with it. Looking like a winner here. I'll keep T-bird for a while to ensure that Eudora is working properly and then likely uninstall T-bird and go strictly with Eudora. It's the future anyway.

You are correct, James.
I ttried the -p switch, and it works with Eudora. I am recycling a profile given up last year, in June.
And, if you have not had my experience, is because you don't have the Penelope addon.
The profile which I use now with Eudora has a different lineup of of buttons.
But, having used Eudora in the past, I am quite pleased with it.

Of course, there is a chance. It depends on what the developers have in mind, but cannot find anything one way or other. I know that the Qualcomm Eudora did not off a Linux version.
It is a great program, and, at this time, I am using TB with the Penelope extention, and the Eudora8.0b1, with different profiles, and love them.
I could not find a way to send feedbacks. I am not an official tester.

16 Sep, 2007 12:07 pm Eudora 8 Menu Bar Question . . . |
[sdp=87269] |
|
Good Day,
New member, long time lurker.
I am using Eudora 8b1, and like everything about it except this, why are the menu bar items different from Eudora 7.X, or the Penelope extension 0.19? The two items I am missing that I use quite reqularly with 7.X and with the extension are Mailbox and Transfer. I find those most usefull in managing my mail.
How can I get the original menu toolbar back, or is that something jsut not available w/8.0b1? I can use Penelope with Eudora, but then I have to accept the mailbox pane headers as the program wants them (i.e. Who, Date, Subject, etc.) as no matter how much I change the order and what I want to see, when I restart Eudora, I am back to what the program default are. I guess if somebody knows how to override this issue, that would solve my first issue.
Anyone?
Thanks . . .

As for the Menu items, you can get a lot of stuff from View|Toolbars|Customize
However, not being much of a n Eudora user, I would not know what to do with the Mailbox and Transfer settings. The Transfer setting is grayed out, but if a specific e-mail header is highlighted, then the Transfer button will come to life.
I am using both TB2.0.0.6 with the Penelope extention and Eudora, using the -p shift (pointing to different profiles).
So far, the major difference is with Newsgroups. I have not been able to subscribe to any of the secnews.netscape.com newsgroups, even after making changes to the security settings.

k, I see the Mailbox button, but it is only for IMAP accounts and Local folders. But everything is listed on the left panel. So, I don't see any use for the Mailbox button.
I figured out how to subscribe to secnews.netscape.com, the only newsgroup to which I subscribe. When the subscribe wizard comes up, click on the Refresh button at the bottom right, and the available newsgroups come to life.
I have not tried any other newsgroup, but it is, likely, to be the same. Type in what you are looking for, and click on Refresh.

Actually, what I really want is the transfer "button" on the menu bar, like Eudora used to have, and the Penelope extension still has. That is the one feature I miss the most. I know there is a "File" extension that does basically the same thing as "Transfer", but it takes up additional space on the Toolbar. Not sure I like that.
I agree that since the mailboxes are all accessible from the left panel (which I keep closed until I need it), that a mailbox "button" in not necessarily needed.

This is what I said in my previous post. You have to select something to be able to transfer it? Don't you? Do you mean that Eudora has a live button whether you select an e-mail or not?
By highlighted, I mean to click on the specific message. I, actually, tested , and a list of my accounts came up, as well as the subfolders. It works the same way as right click|move.
I may get used to it.
Are you not getting what I describe?

Yea - I am getting what you are saying, but I am not describing what I am looking for all that well.
On my Eudora Menu Bar, I have File|Edit|View|Go|Message|Tools|Help. With the Penelope extension added and enabled, I get File|Edit|View|Go|MAILBOX|Message|TRANSFER|Tools|Help (this is also how the original Eudora 7.XX menu bar was). I would have thought that since Eudora 8 is supposed to be inclusive of Penelope Alpha21, it wouldn't be any different from Alpha19 (as far as the menu bar layout), which is the last edition that the extension, separate from Eudora, is available.
All that being said, I now have Alpha19 installed and enabled with my Eudora 8, and I have the menu bar I want. I am still not happy with the column headers for the mail list pane (i.e. Who, Subject, Date, Size, etc.), which reset to a program default everytime I restart Eudora, but it is a minor issue, and has been reported, and I am hopeful to see something closer to what I want with future releases (don't we all?!).
Does this make it any clearer what I am trying to accomplish?
