I am wondering if anyone can explain (from a market perspective) why the manufacturers have had a difficult time producing 2.5" IDE drives? It seems like they made a major shift to the SATA configuration and as a result - IDE notebook drives have become nearly impossible to get - at least from mainstream suppliers like Ingram Micro, Mighty Micro and others? Is it because they tried to transition with the new configs coming out of Intel and AMD and saturated the market with so many SATA that they have been forced to pull way back on their IDE production which has created a drastic shortage in the market place? Any feedback with data to support would be great. Thanks.

SATA has small connector compared to IDE, hence it suits the new trend for a very important reason... space saving, and easier to fit into today's 1-inch notebooks (e.g. MacBook Pro, MacBook).

Western Digital has a variey of EIDE 2.5" drives. Presumably they are available at retailers. Or, one can order directly on the web site. I haven't checked other manufacturers' sites.
