From The Netscape Blog,

Quote:
Netscape is pleased to announce the immediate availability of the first release candidate of Netscape Navigator 9.

You might be interested in these descriptions.

Quote:
Due to Netscape.com's transition from a social news site to a traditional news portal (and the resulting re-launch of the social news site at Propeller.com), we made the decision to remove the built-in social news functionality from the Netscape Navigator Web browser.

NN9RC1 is available from browser.netscape.com

Thanks for the heads-up, Joji.

I guess a number of people will be happy that Netscape 9.0 (RC1 at least) that all the social-addons are not included.

The full paragraph:

Due to Netscape.com's transition from a social news site to a traditional news portal (and the resulting re-launch of the social news site at Propeller.com), we made the decision to remove the built-in social news functionality from the Netscape Navigator Web browser. We will be releasing those features as stand-alone Propeller-branded browser extensions shortly, and our browser development efforts will be refocused on providing new features and browsing enhancements not specifically tied to a single Web service.

I doubt many people would be interested to get the "stand-alone Propeller-branded browser extensions".

I personally would be interested to know if those social-addons are open enough for other websites to link their own.

O.K. dudes and dudettes.

I just finished installing th RC on three computers. I wanted to get rid of the Weather Bug thing, so I did it in Tools|Add-ons. On two computers it went away immediately. On the thrid computer, I could not get rid of it. I tried three times.

Any ideas?

Have you tried deleting Netscape's profile on your third computer?

Egad, Antony, way too drastic for me.

Just for kicks, I started a new profile on my SeaMonkey browser. I quit. Too much work, you know, getting cookie IDs established, saving user ID's and passwords. I just quit.

But, thanks for the response.

I put the same post over on the Netscape 9 Technical forum. We'll see what they (Jay G.) come up with.

04 Oct, 2007 1:45 pm Upgrading to the new Netscape 9 version from Netscape 7.2? [sdp=87560]

I'm still using Netscape 7.2. Will I be able to upgrade to the new version of Netscape 9 and bring along all my e-mail address books? I don't want to lose all my e-mail addresses if possible. If that isn't possible, could I export the addresses and then import them back into the new version after installing it?

Also, is Composer still a feature of the new version? I use Composer with some classes I teach and am very curious about improvements in it that would justify the upgrade hassle.

Thanks for any info you can provide.

Hey BergDoc-

How are you.

If you are using Netscape 7.2, the full suite, you need to go not to Netscape 9, which is right now a browser only; but to SeaMonkey 1.1.4, which is a full suite with browser, composer, and email. Netscape 9 will eventually have an email utility, but there are no plans for a suite like Netscape 7.2.

If you are not a suite user, just using the browser then by all means Netscape 9 is good.

Also, you can use Netscape 9 with Thunderbird.

The very worst thing you can do is stay with Netscape 7.2. First, it is not really Netscape. It is really re-packaged Mozilla Suite from the Mozilla Foundation, which now produces Firefox and houses SeaMonkey and Thunderbird. It has not been updated, even for security for a long time.

If you switch to SeaMonkey, your profile and everything else should translate over invisibly and seamlessly with no hitches.

Any problems and questions can be handled by the very able folks in this forum.

Best of luck, welcome to the club.

So far I like it . Renders pages almost as quick as the older versions like 7.2 and color rendition for some reason seems better . Certainly a lot better than that poor excuse NS 8 browser . Runs good so far even on a older machine like mine with lower memory and a old Os (ME) . Yeah I know one of these days I will change it to XP , machine won't handle that bloated Vista excuse of a OS .

If you were using the 7.2 suite, you can use Thunderbird for your email.

Consider me completely underwhelmed. This is really no more than Firefox with a new theme and Netscape branding plastered on to it. I'm quite happy with Firefox 2.0.0.7 and IE 7 and see absolutely no reason to install this.

Netscape ceased being an innovative company a long time ago. AOL should stop dragging the Netscape name through more dirt and just stop using it completely. Netscape has gone from being a company worth in excess of $4bn to a re-badged web browser and a second rate news portal. That's just sad.

07 Oct, 2007 8:48 am 2 questions [sdp=87635]

Hello,
So is this a offical finished release? If I download it will it still have bugs and problems like a beta would?

My major concern, I use NS 8.1.3 if I download NS 9 will I be able to import all my setting and bookmarks? When I install NS 9 will it go on top of NS 8.1.3 or will it be seperate? Will I have NS 9 & NS 8.1.3?

Any info anyone can provide would be great.

SEE YAYAYA!!!

This is a Release Candidate. That is a higher level than a public beta, but it is not THEE RELEASE.

All your "stuff" from 8.1.3 will remain in your Documents and Settings, or the Registry, or a similar repository, even if you un-install 8.1.3. The installation of 9 will go and get that stuff, which is essentially your profile. That does not mean that user id's and passwords will be saved; but bookmarks and some configuration should come along.

But, Netscape 9 has nothing else in common with 8.1.3, so you should look to set it up pretty much from scratch. You will be much happier.

Netscape 8.x.x was a mess. Netscape 9 is solid as a rock.

I never paid attention if NS8.x was one of the programs from which settings could be imported automatically or manually. My 8.1.3 was long gone, after it drove me crazy for about six moths, and I had removed the profile, on uninstalling 8.1.3.
At the very least one should have both 8.1.3 and 9RC1 (RC=release candidate). The bookmarks.html file would be importable, but I know that the unusual password file, i.e. .7ru had given people fits. NS9 files should be interchangeable with those of Firefox, except for the prefs.js file.
