Bungie Studios, famous for making Microsoft Xbox's killing game - Halo, announces its independence on Friday.

Bungie was formed as an independent company in 1991 and gained fame for its Marathon first-person shooter series for Macintosh platform. The company had been developing Halo for the Mac before Microsoft bought it and redirected Halo to the Xbox.

MacNN wrote:
Halo was first revealed at the 1999 Macworld expo, where it was announced that the game was to first debut on the Mac, with a PC version to follow. Bungie was absorbed into Microsoft in 2000 however, and the game debuted for the Xbox in 2001, with the Mac and PC editions shipping two years later. There has been no Mac port of Halo 2, and it is unknown whether PCs or Macs will receive the Xbox 360-based Halo 3.

Microsoft will retain a minority equity in the game maker, but Bungie will be free to develop for any platform it chooses.

In related news, Microsoft has made over $300m in the first week of Halo 3 sales!

Not surprising really, the game is great. The graphics are excellent for a 360 game, on par with BioShock or Gears of War IMO. I haven't fully finished the game yet, but I've thoroughly enjoyed what I've played so far. (Trying to play through Gears of War, Bioshock [on PC] and Halo3 all at the same time; there aren't enough hours in a day!)
