15 Oct, 2007 2:45 pm Netscape 9.0 Final is out [sdp=87889]

They finally released the final version of Netscape 9.0.

Get Netscape 9.0

The download file is netscape-navigator-9.0.exe

The direct link at Netscape's ftp site is:
ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/netscape9/en-US/9.0/windows/win32/netscape-navigator-9.0.exe

BTW, That bug in 9.0 RC1 where 1 inch of the bottom of the browser
was wasted was very annoying.

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.8pre) Gecko/20071015 Firefox/2.0.0.7 Navigator/9.0

I never had that bug. I am guessing that it may have originated by doing an incremental update.

You are right. It must have been something like that. The bug appeared to some kind of diagnostic status area about 1 inch high. I could find no way to get rid of it.

For curiosity I downgraded to NS 9.0 RC1 only to find the bug was gone! Also, I am seeing something new. Weather Bug is now in the status bar. I never saw that before.

After going back to NS 9.0 Final the Weather Bug is still there. When I first updated from NS 9.0 RC1 to NS 9.0 Final the Weather Bug was not there. Another difference was that the first time I did an auto update while the second time I used the file I downloaded from Netscape.

You can uninstall Weatherbug from Tools|Options|Addons. For me it reduntant, as I use Forecastfox.

Netscape Navigator 9.0 can be downloaded from Netscape Browser Archive's Netscape 9 section.

All other SillyDog701 and MozInfo701 related pages will be updated shortly.

So far, Netscape 9.0 works very well for me. I will need to test it more.

Hello, computer idiot speaking here. Confused

My 4.7 stopped working to support my website so reluctantly & with fear I'll have to upgrade. Crying or Very sad

I use NS communicator for extensive filing of msgs, large addressbook, and bookmarks. I am not willing to lose any of these.

If I upgrade to NS 9, will those 3 things automatically transfer?

Will upgrading in any way delete my 4.7, i.e. once I've tried 9.0 RC1 will I be able to go back?

Where is the NS 9.0 RC1 download to avoid the 1" gap people have mentioned? I'd rather not have to try this twice. Especially since I don't know what it'll look like nor what I'll get. Shocked

And I definitely do not want the Weather Bug thingie so how do I avoid that or get rid of it if it appears?

Please help me. Somebody. Anybody. Thank you so very much.

Jo (dogalet)

I just got lost in thought. It was unfamiliar territory.

Jo, can you save your bookmarks to a file? If so, I stornglt recommend doing that, as I think the bookmarks will not carry.

NS9 is not a suite. THat is to say, it is just a browser. I recommend you move to SeaMonkey if you want to continue using those functions.

TO get rid of WeatherBug, go to Tools -> Addons. Find the WeatherBug thing, and click uninstall, then restart Netscape.

I decided to try the following URL to get information about official security fixes:
http://browser.netscape.com/ns9/security/alerts.jsp

But it doesn't work, the URL generates 404 error and page doesn't exists.

However, it is expected that all security vulnerabilities since previous Gecko engine 1.7.5 have been fixed with this release.

The easiest way to check the situation is via this old Secunia advisory:

And outside of security world, there was Netscape Blog posting related to this version update too:

Hello,
Just downloaded NAV 9. Easy install and imported my bookmarks fairly easy. Some of my settings did not follow the NAV 8 import. (Pop up blockers setting, some user name settings) Nothing really important. Read about the weather bug problems, but I just moved it to the bookmark bar and it's out of the way. Have to get use to the mini Browser and I like the link pad. Have not really used it much to really test it. But I am looking forward to it.

One quick question. NAv 8 use to have a email button that would launch my default email program. I don't see that in NAv 9. Am I missing it or is that just removed?

Any info would be great.

Once I play with it, I will post more. But so far so good.

SEE YAYA!!!

Hi Somedude, Yes, I can save the bookmarks. I think I know how to do that. Smile

A computer savvy friend uses Sea Monkey. I am just a nitwit and frightened of change (unfamiliar territory & appearance) and losing my files.

I've not heard the term "suite" before. If NS9 is just a browser, does it not transfer data from my old 4.7 which is why you recommend Sea Monkey (about which I know nothing).

Thx for the instructions re Weather Bug.

Surprised)'s, Jo

19 Oct, 2007 4:09 pm very nice [sdp=87991]

I like the small buttons (back/forward/reload) and how reload and stop were integrated into one. I was using Firefox before and although NS9 is basically FF 2.0, it has some extra features that I like..and what's more is FF extensions work with NS9. Only a 5.5MB download too. Smile
