16 Jun, 2008 4:46 am Firefox 3 Download Day Announced: Tuesday, June 17 |

Quote from MozDev Blog:
| Quote: | Whenever we’re asked “when is Firefox going to be released” we endeavor to answer to the best of our abilities, but the truth of the matter is that we’ll only ever ship “when it’s ready”. We have a lot of indicators that help us understand when the product is ready for release: feedback from our pre-release milestones, excitement in the community and the press, availability of compatible Add-Ons, and a large active beta community helping us ensure that the release is compatible with all the various sites on the Internet.
After more than 34 months of active development, and with the contributions of thousands, we’re proud to announce that we’re ready. It is our expectation to ship Firefox 3 this upcoming Tuesday, June 17th. Put on your party hats and get ready to download Firefox 3 — the best web browser, period. |
Of course there’s always the chance a show-stopping bug will be discovered before then, which could cause a delay. Already a major bug was found in the Mac version which necessitated a third release candidate for Mac users.

Really coming - Latest news: | Quote: | This morning at 10:00am UTC we began the process of sending the final version of Firefox 3 to our mirror network to prepare for Download Day. We’re just as excited as you are for our upcoming release, but we’re still putting the finishing touches on Firefox 3: preparing the new mozilla.com website, getting our severs ready for downloads, and doing our final pre-launch checks. We expect to be done at 17:00 UTC - find out what time that is where you are. You can even follow our progress if you’d like!
The files in the FTP directories of our mirrors are - for now - only meant to be used by our testers. We would appreciate it if our fans didn’t follow direct links there that they might see on sites like Digg, Reddit, or Neowin. Downloading them directly can harm our ability to distribute Firefox efficiently, and will also not be counted as part of our attempt to set a Guiness World Record for the most software downloads in a day.
If you’d like to be notifed the minute that we launch, please go to sign up for Download Day. Or just head over to getfirefox.com on Tuesday, June 17th at 17:00 UTC. |
I wonder if there will be any changes from the last PR.

Nor I. Frankly, it's become a pain in the a#$. They knew this was going to be the case and yet they talked about the wonders of Bouncer and the fact that they did not need mirrors. Baloney.

i've downloaded the 3.0 release and it is the same as the last release candidate on windows - a binary comparison revealed no differences. i downloaded it anyway to help them beat the record.

Finally, I got it downloaded and I am impressed with the speed.
Mozilla claims that Firefox 3.0 is at least two or three times faster than previous versions on Mac OS X. On Mac OS X, Gecko 1.9 is based on Cocoa instead of Carbon.
The improved interface is interesting.

I quite like Firefox 3's Instant Web Site ID feature (for secure connections)
It is quite noticeable. If you are interested in more information about the website, just click on it.

I downloaded and install it at about 10:00 last night. However I have not been able to connect to MySpace, Yahoo, SillyDog701 or any of the sites I regularly use. That includes search engines like Google.

I had hesitated, for a moment, considering some of the bad reports. I tried anyway, and FF3.0 has been no problem, and isn't it fast. Coming from 3.0RC3, I am wondering if others did not do it, and went directly to FF3.0. And, my only complaint about the RC version was the attempted default stealing. It does not seem to be a problem with this build. I
I will take back my default stealing observation, although I don't know how this works.
I checked FF3.0 before I closed it, and it said that it was not default, and I said No to the choice. I, just, opened 2.0.0.14, and it, immediately, came up saying that it was not default.
So, who was default? No one? I did not test it, but, though a minor nuisance, I don't like this.

I put FF3 on my test XP machine. It was fine. My two big extensions are Colorful Tabs and IETab, both were fine.
So, I put it on my two current Core 2 Duo machines. No problemo. Just no Roboform yet, but on FF, I do not need it.
FF3 corrected a problem on one machine Core 2 Duo machine: my ISP's web mail, FF2 had been autofilling email addresses once they were used once, and then it quit. On my work machine, where I really need this (NN9 does it fine), the problem was corrected in FF3, at least I can say for the moment. But on my home machine, where I rarely use this feature, the problem still exists.
I compared every line in about:config and could not find any appropriate discrepancy.
If anyone knows what I should do, I will appreciate hearing.

I managed to get it to work by creating a new profile. It is now my default browser, and my favorite release of Firefox yet.

Hey John-
The first time this happened, the only thing that worked was to uninstall FF, edit the registry to completely get rid of any trace of FF, and then re-install and rebuild with a new profile. That was a huge task, many bookmarks to get up on, user id's and passwords, cookies to re-establish.
That was a few months ago, and, now, a couple of weeks ago, it just up and quit again. So, you are right, but it is just too much work to do over and over.
The real question is why it now works in one machine-and for how long- when it worked in neither machine prior to FF3.
I set the laptop, where it works, next to the desktop, where it does not, and ran down about:config looking for variances. I found nothing to change.

Richard, you may just want to ditch FF on the machine it doesn't work on and go to Flock or something. That seems like a pain, and a lot of lost data.
