22 Jun, 2008 7:48 am PlayStation 3 vs Xbox 360 vs Wii, your opinion? |

Some of you should know that I have been looking for a game console for the new TV . And I've been thinking about getting a PlayStation 3 for the sack of Blu-ray playback .
Taking PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii, which one would you prefer and why? And if money is not a factor, which game console would you buy (only one)?
And which game console would you recommend Antony to get? (Antony is not a gamer.)
Also, for current PlayStation 3 model (40GB model), it is true that it can't play PlayStation 2 games at all?
Thanks.

And should I go through all the trouble to get a 60GB model (the one that plays PlayStation 2 games)?
Somehow I also read that earlier models consumes more power than 40GB model.

There is some bad news for Antony. Sony are relaunching the Bravia PS3 promotion as of July 1st.
The Wii has never interested me, and probably never will. 480P as the top resolution? 512MB storage space? A GPU comparable to a Geforce 2 and a CPU that's a derivative of an old PPC G3? No thanks.
That, for me, would leave the Xbox 360 and the PS3. The two are quite evenly matched in terms of hardware. The 360 has a larger better library of games IMO. (Games like Gears of War, Mass Effect, Halo 3 and so forth) The PS3 still has tons of great games too, some which are also on the 360 like Grand Theft Auto IV and Call of Duty 4 and some great exclusives like Metal Gear Solid 4 and Resistance: Fall of Man. I'd say that the 360 has a slight edge in the area of games and online play.
One of the main features of the PS3 is the ability to play BD movies. The 360 does a great job of playing ordinary DVDs, but the 360 is incapable of playing BD movies.
Also take a look at what is included with each console. The 360 for instance includes a media remote but omits WiFi. The PS3 has WiFi included but doesn't include the remote; just as a few examples. There's also the price. The PS3 is $700 while the 360 is $580 for the 360 and $730 for the 360 Elite.
Bottom line: Games and more Games, I'd go the 360. HD movies, and games, the PS3 is the better choice.

Thanks for the advice, Mandrake.

Well, I can't do too much about that.
Domayne was willing to match Harvey Norman's sale price ($1000 off RRP), then I can claim $300 cash back from Sony.
I don't think there will be immediately sales after mid year sale/end of financial year sale.

X-box 360, Antony, would have been my choice. BUT I congratulate you on your purchase and hope you have many wonderful days playing its games.

Based on game titles. (As I am not a gamer, ) I found that I am more inclined to Wii titles. Those games designed for younger ages simply suit me better (or perhaps easier to play).
The main reasons I chose PlayStation 3 instead of others:
- It does Blu-ray playback and it seems to be one of the cheapest Blu-ray players in the market.
- PlayStation 3 has a better media centre.
- PlayStation 3 can surf internet
, not that I intend to use it as main browser, but it will be handy to be able to access internet on a new big TV.
- Most importantly, it looks cool. It has more stylish looking than Xbox 360 and Wii in my opinion.

Just to post an update.
I got a Wii and Wii Fit last week.
Although the graphic is nowhere as powerful as PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360, it is a very good gaming console. Lots of interesting game titles (that suit me).

don't forget to get super mario galaxy. it's an absolutely fantastic game that's so much fun to play. some people associate mario with being a kiddies game... don't: it's perfectly engineered.
i have friends with all the consoles, wii, xbox360, ps3, and the wii is by far and a way the most fun to play.
sure, the games on the xbox360 and playstation look fantastic, but the games are so boring, i mean, running around in a brown/grey landscape shooting at people/aliens/robots? it was fun in 1992 with doom, but 15 years later it's just more of the same. all the games ps3/xbox360 games i've played (with the possible exception of guitar hero) seem to be pretty same-y.
i'm not a serious gamer, i just want something fun to do on a rainy sunday night... the xbox and playstation games seem to require you to invest many hundreds of hours to get through them... i just can't intellectually justify it. i just want something fun to do. the ps3 and xbox360 doesn't seem to have enough of those kind of games from what i can see.

Thanks Dr. Lobster*,
Although only getting the Wii for a few days. I found that Wii is easier and much more fun to play (particularly with friends) than PS3. Since I am not into shooting/fighting games, I found the game titles in PlayStation 3 is very limited.
Of course, the best game when friends come over is still the Monopoly (board game, using real board and pieces), if time is allowed.

that's what i like about the wii - it brings people together, gaming can be a social event.
it seems incredible that there are female friends of mine who would never normally get excited about computer games organising 'wii-nights' for a bit of fun. that would have never happened even a couple of years ago.
you see, the playstation and the xbox360 both advocate multiplayer experiences over the internet which invariably mean that you end up sitting in a room on your own playing a game... that's just no fun to me.
and i'm with you on the monopoly, you've just got be sensible and stick to a time to declare the winner whatever happens.

When playing Monopoly, we always agree on the "house rules" first (e.g. jackpot on landing Free Parking, $400 on landing Go etc).
Once one player got bankrupted, the game will end soon after.
