If you don't like Microsoft Office, there's a good news for you. OpenOffice.org has released the OpenOffice.org 3.0 to public. Best of all, it's free.

New features in version 3 include:
  • Collaborative editing.
  • XML support and XSLT based filter support.
  • Import filters for MS Office file formats: .docx. xlsx, pptx.
  • Read/write support for OpenDocument Format (OSF) 1.2.
  • Re-introduction of partial support for Visial Basic for Applications.

OpenOffice.org 3.0 is free and can be downloaded from OpenOffice.org website. OpenOffice.org is available for Mac OS X, Windows, Linux and Solaris.

The full feature list will be available at OpenOffice.org website after this ‘unprecedented demand’.

OpenOffice.org 3.0 Beta was released in early May, and the 3.0 final version was originally expected to be released in mid September.

OpenOffice.org 3.0 for Mac requires Intel processor and it is native which means no Unix X11 environment is required, the PowerPC version is still 2.4.

They were very busy. I tried the download, and I got something, after four or five hours, and when I tried to run it, I was told that the file was corrupted. I have cable, and the download went at about 4Kbs. From the program checking for updates failed.
So, back to the drawing board.

I just downloaded the entire 142MB in less than 20 min. The installation took a bit longer than that, but it was uneventful. The older version was, automatically, removed, and all info imported.

I really had a reason to try Open Office: I had in error uninstalled MS Office and could not get it to reinstall.

I gave Open Office a couple of trial tasks, like opening an existing .mdb file. Sorry, not for me.

I got help from Microsoft, an expert engineer did the job for me direct from Bangalore.

In return, I gave him a restaurant recommendation in San Diego, where he was to visit his brother.

I had an unusual experience installing 3.0 on Windows. After installing and going through the registration screens, instead of the splash screen displaying, the computer rebooted. THREE TIMES!

I finally uninstalled it, rebooted, downloaded it again from a different mirror, MD5 matched, installed, rebooted again.

Then, it worked. Rolling Eyes

OpenOffice.org 3.0 is included with Mandriva Linux 2009.0 and works wonderfully. Smile
