24 Feb, 2009 7:12 pm Safari 4 Public Beta - available for testing [sdp=95580]

Apple has released the first public Beta of Safari 4, a new version of its web browser that packs a powerful new JavaScript engine and support for the latest web standards.

Dubbed "Nitro," the engine in Safari 4 is said to run JavaScript 4.2 times faster than Safari 3. Other new features include Top Sites, for a visual preview of frequently visited pages; Full History Search, to search through titles, web addresses and the complete text of recently viewed pages; Cover Flow, to easily flip through web history or bookmarks; and Tabs on Top, to make tabbed browsing easier and more intuitive.

Safari 4 also includes Accessible Rich Interactive Applications, full page zoom support, CSS effects and CSS Canvas support, HTML 5 offline support, offline database support, and smart search recommendations. It sports several features for developers, too such as a new Web Inspector, a page elements view, a JavaScript debugger, a page resources view, and more. For more information about the exciting new features in Safari 4, please visit this page (and 150 features of Safari 4).

If you are a Windows user, Safari 4 will look very home as it features Windows native look and feel. Safari 4 can be downloaded from http://www.apple.com/safari/ page. Safari 4 Beta is available for both Windows and Mac.

I wanted to try this new version for Windows, BUT It has a bad bug right out of the box..
When it starts it ask for your default browser, Clicking yes or no will kill all process and turn off the browser.. can't seem to get passed that point.

Sorry, can't help you on that. I might try to install Safari for Windows on Windows XP under Parallels Desktop if I have time.

The new features are not just interesting but also useful!

I downloaded and installed it. It ran fine, although, I ran into an interesting problem, it would not load pages.

I would type in the Url and it would say "Safari was unable to load the page.". Yes, I did check to see if the proxy and connection setting were correct, and they were.

I think it may be a good browser when it's in final stages, but for now I think I will stick with IE and Chrome.

For some reason, I had a little trouble installing it on XP. I had to try twice, but then it took.

I had told an older version not to ask about default browser, so I did not have any problem with that.

I know this seems obvious, but once I told the firwall to allow Safari, there was no problem. Note that some firewalls will block new versions without asking you.

It works fine. In my test, I was not as impressed as Antony, but that may be a Windows v OS X thing.

I'm not installing it on my Mac's at this point, I do love my SeaMonkey suite, but when I get some time to play, I will give it a spin.

02 Jun, 2009 5:38 am Safari beta 4 XP bug [sdp=96788]

I loaded the Safari beta 4 public on my XP. Twice as fast as anyother browser. The only problem is a warning window pops up telling me it cannot locate a flash file. I followed the link down loaded file still have the same problem. This also seems to cause the browser to lock up as well.

"has content of MIME type "application/x-shockwave-flash',but you do not have a plug in for this MIME type.

Then it provides this page that might have the plug in. www.micromedia.com/go/getflashplayer

Suggestions???

I had Safari before, and I liked it, though I did not keep it. I am using XP-SP3, and the installation seems to have been ok. Safari imported the IE Favorites, but did not ask if I wanted anything else, and cannot figure out what to do with the bookmarks. I got to this website by doing a Search.
When I was given the choice to select a default, a Bug Report came up. I sent it on, but there were no ill effects, for now.
I tried to copy .dll files from Seamonkey, just in case, but I don't understand this program.

You can see what happened. This beta is a mess, at least for Windows. It has hung up in more places that I have seen in the past few years. After the third Cntrl+Alt+Del, I got rid of it.
It may be ok for Macs, or it is a beta problem, but I rather mess with Google Chrome.

Should be macromedia. Macromedia was bought by Adobe a few years ago.

I tried it, Mac wise at school. It was okay, but over all I still prefer Firefox.

With Firefox I have: Multiple Add-Ons, faster page loading, and better windows support.
With Safari I have: A sluggish, no-extra-use browser.

... gotta say, the layout, the speed of this browser ... it screams. I like the improvements as to how you're able to access various features, etc. It's a winner! (and I'm an old Netscapian/Mozilla advocate from way back 90's)
