16 Jun, 2009 5:25 pm External DVD Drive |

I just bought an older computer, from a woman I work with.
It needs three major upgrades:
DVD-Drive
More Ram (256MB, man is it slow!)
and a new Graphics Card (The one presently is not bad or anything, just not so great.)
I was wondering, if it was possible to install Vista/Win7 on an external DVD drive, which would save me the hassle of installing one.
Anyone know?
Thanks,
John

Yes it should be possible.

I'm the exception, not the rule. Remember that, and you'll be all right. |

Before doing anything, make sure the system is capable of booting from a USB device, otherwise you may end up with an external DVD drive that doesn't actually do anything from you. Usually there will be a section in the BIOS setup program where you'll be able to select boot priority for a USB device, if it is indeed capable of booting from one.

I've booted from my Flash drive to Ubuntu before, so I know the option is there.
Thanks for the help.
Next question, how would I go about networking an external HD?

I bought an external DVD writer for my netbook which runs WinXP. the Atom N270 processor, and 1 gig of DRAM. In fact, I actually bought two; an LG and an HP. They both work just fine.
