Switch S4 doesn't do anything. On the case to this machine there's a label that gives a description of what the switches do; S4 says "Reserved" so I assume it's only for other machines using the same board.
LBA controllers are indeed like gold dust nowadays since just about every board is LBA-controlled anyway. Plus, you need to find an ISA format card unless there's some PCI to ISA converter card that I am not aware of. It's hard to do a search for one though because Microsoft conveniently named their server firewall "ISA Server" so anything you look up for ISA LBA will probably turn out to be a guide on how to create a home-built firewall.
Ron -- 8 or 10GB drives (or for that matter anything in the GB range) is not a drive like that; those are all LBA. The largest non-LBA hard drive that can exist I believe is 540MB.

Wierd, because I remember having to enter all this information about the drive into the computer before it would read the drive.

PC 1 (Main PC)
HP Pavilion (Circa 2000)
533 MHz Pentium III
63 MB RAM
27 GB Hard Drive
Windows 98 SE |
I've just updated that computer . . . ! To make a long story short, the hard drive was starting to fail and I tried to install Windows NT 4 onto it and it wasn't pretty. Let's just say the hard drive was messed enough I couldn't load any operating system.
So after that, I just figured I'd upgrage most of the hardware in the computer: the motherboard, processor, memory, and hard drive and a new OS.
I got the last part today, and put all the new hardware in this evening.
The new specs on this machine are:
- AMD Sempron 2200+ at 1.49 GHz *
- 256 MB RAM *
- 80 GB 7200 RPM Hard Drive *
- CD-RW Drive
- CD-ROM Drive
- Floppy Drive
- Windows XP Home with Service Pack 2 *
- 15" CRT monitor at 1024x768
* Starred items are new. |
If anyone's interested, here are some pictures I took of this PC a while back. (I don't think I posted these pictures on the forum, only in an online chat.)
The computer sitting on the floor, with the side off, with an HP ink-jet printer off to the left:
A 15" Compaq CRT monitor, with some small HP/Polk Audio speakers to the the side, and my Netgear USB 802.11g wifi adapter ontop the monitor. The Windows XP Home install process is on the screen:

Surprise, surprise: it turns out that my 33MHz 486 isn't a 486 after all -- it's really an 83MHz Pentium Overdrive.

The video card as used in the iMacs (with Intel Core Duo processors) and MacBook Pro?
