John,

My install of the Streamline 7.0 with Navigator, Mail & Instant Messaging, and Spell Checker, was a whopping total of 11,500 KB. A saving of 19,900 KB.

If you use the "Custom" install, you will be way ahead of the game. See THIS page, if you are unfamiliar with the "Custom" install.

13 Sep, 2002 5:39 pm Thanks Ramona / Going from 4.79 to 7.0 [sdp=1746]

Thanks for the response and insight on custom install. Can I leave 4.79 in place and just custom install 7.0? Does COMPOSER come with 7.0? I understand that 7.0 will transfer bookmarks and other preferences. Forgive me, but what is classic skin?

Hi John,

Yes, definitely leave Communicator 4.79 on board. Communicator and Netscape 7.0 reside quite contentedly with each other.

Composer is definitely a component of Netscape 7.0. I don't use it, but perhaps someone who does can fill you in with more detail.

Yes, the Netscape 7.0 installation will convert your Communicator 4.79 Users Profile to its Profile format. Isn't that spectacular, well.... in most cases it does that. Once in a while it stutters, but infrequently. Personally, I've tried several versions of 7.0 and my Profile was converted flawlessly each install.

The Classic Skin, is the "appearance" of Netscape. The skins give the browser a different appearance, with unique buttons, etc. The Classic skin in particular is very similar to Communicator. I alternate using SkyPilot and Modern, as that is my taste. I also tend to be adventurous when it comes to Netscape.

One other tip, and I intend to add this to my "Custom Install" page. Once you have Netscape 7.0 up and running to your satisfaction, you might want to install adblocker.xpi. This will stop those annoying popup ads.

To install the file you will need to enable, under Preferences|Advanced|Software Installation... Enable Software Installation

Otherwise the component won't install. You will find the file HERE or HERE

Benefit of Netscape 7.0 Streamline

There are many benefits of using Netscape 7.0 Streamline (from SillyDog701) such as the much smaller file sizes.
No brandings.
All changes are detailed documented.
Other than that, there are no additional tweaks. None at all. (additional bookmark and sidebar are only available to new profile uses only, and can be easily removed.)

The SillyDog 701 Streamline would serve the best interest for end users, because they can get the browser that is (almost) the same configuration as from Netscape Communications Corp. Simply, there are no internal modification/tweaks/configurations, and users can be sure that nothing has been modified/changed.

The Netscape 7.0 Streamline from SillyDog 701 has been extensively tested, and SillyDog701 has been creating Netscape Streamline series since version 6.1.

20 Sep, 2002 4:15 am More benefits of Netscape 7.0 Streamline Series [sdp=1937]

You don't need to keep updating the Netscape 7.0 Streamline, unlike other editions, there are no updates since it released because it has been extensively tested to ensure the best quality. (No repeating downloads of the same Netscape 7.0 version is necessary at all.) It will be updated once newer Netscape is released.
Additional add-ons such as adblockers can be easily added into Netscape 7.0 Streamline.
Streamline series of Netscape 7.0 is hosted in fast FTP server.

Just FYI, I have a very old Pentium II, and I've been unable to use any Netscape after 4.8. But I can get NS7 Streamline to work. It's slow, but usable.

Jim: How slow are you talking? I've got Mozilla 1.2.1 running on my old Pentium Pro 180mhz with 128mb ram. Netscape should run fine on a P II.
