Unfortunately, Netscape is dead. According to MozillaZine at http://www.mozillazine.org/talkback.html?article=3422 , as well as several other sources, AOL has completely disbanded the Netscape division and has fired all employees left that worked on Gecko and/or Netscape.

It's the end of an era.

Mozilla will continue with donations from IBM and Sun, but as AOL owns the Netscape name, it's dead. 7.1 was the final version.

They pulled off the Netscape sign on the main building about four days ago, and this was coming for a while. The name Netscape isn't dead, but yeah, you're more or less correct.

It's only the end of developing of new Netscape (browser), not the Netscape Network.

Time to update Netscape Version Guide.

The portal makes them money . . . the browser does NOTHING for them . . . why should they continue to make it? It's made no gain on IE.

If AOL had actually bothered to promote Netscape properly, as a viable (and safer alternative to
IE) it would've regained a good proportion of it's marketshare. Instead, AOL squandered billions
of dollars on acquiring the company, that made many millions of people sit up and take notice of
the internet, thanks to it (commercially) being the pioneer of graphical web browsers.

AOL did next to nothing with their acquisition of Netscape, and sat idly by, as it was gradually
battered into submission by Microsoft. AOL let a good thing go to waste, and as of today,
they should be thoroughly, and absolutely ashamed of themselves for that.

While AOL still owns the Netscape name and the Netscape brand, I hope that a better company
such as Sun, IBM, RedHat, or even Apple, eventually puts in an offer to acquire Netscape, and
and uses the acquisition to it's fullest potential, which is something that AOL never did.

Meanwhile, I hope AOL continues to lose money, and eventually just fades away into obscurity.

If AOL promoted Netscape, then Microsoft would have cut the deal that put the AOL icon on the desktop - and that's not something America Online would have wanted.

That's as maybe. But then, the original deal between AOL and Microsoft, whereby AOL could
bundle IE with it's software, while Microsoft handed AOL a prominent place on the Windows
desktop, was established at least 2 years before AOL acquired Netscape. It officially came
to an end in January 2001, which was over two and a half years ago.

That's when AOL really could've started to make the most of their acquisition of Netscape,
and promoted it to the hilt. But what did they do? Diddley flamin' squat, that's what! And
they continue to do diddley flamin's squat right up to the very end. A whole two and a
half years of wasted opportunities to help Netscape regain much needed market share.

If AOL had invested a decent level of time and effort into Netscape, (and the Mozilla project
for that matter) instead of a wasteful merger with a media conglomerate, Netscape 6 might
have actually been a decent browser, and not the shambolic mess it turned out to be!

Mozilla has always been prompted as something for testers, not for the end user.

They really need to come up with something that will make the end user comfortable in using their product.

Meanwhile, I'm debating whether to uninstall Netscape 7.1 under Windows, since it's basically toast.

My message should have read promoted, not prompted.

I don't have a problem with the layout. When I teried out the Linux version yesterday, it ran faster than Netscape did.

DJGM, that is totally truthful. At the time of America Online acquiring Netscape Communications, IE4 and NN4 had about 45% of the market each, if AOL had released a few new versions of Communicator, and indeed a Communicator 5 - Netscape still could have remained the browser king . . . !

Unfortunatelly I can not agree more. This is really the darkest day in the history of Internet. I think since CCK for version 7.1 will not be published, we can say goodbye to CCK builds also.
