In truth, what does it all mean? Is the legitimate?

It looks legitimate. Early summer... that means it'd likely be based on Mozilla 1.7.

Looks real. Glasblog is also pointing at it.

Bloody Nora! Did hell just freeze over or something?!?

If this is all true that AOL are bringing us a new update for the Netscape
browser suite, then it is truly fantastic news, as well as being a massive
(and very pleasant) surprise. But, it does raise some pertinent questions:

<-> What will the version number be for this upgrade . . . 7.2, 7.5 or 8.0 . . . ?
<-> What is the likelyhood of any future releases, or will this be the very last one?
<-> Have AOL secretly re-established a new Netscape browser team, albeit in-house?
<-> Is there to be a CCK for those of us that used to create customised Netscape builds?
<-> Most importantly, is this just a big hoax, to give us one-time Netscape fans, false hope?

Microsoft Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

I'd place my bets on Netscape 7.5, if this is real. And a CCK would be very nice indeed Smile I'd also guess that if AOL has secretly formed a new in-house browser team, that Netscape 7.2/7.5/8.0 (If it does truly exsist) will include features not found in Mozilla.

This version will come too late for many people. I, personally, can not put much trust in the AOL machine which has never produced a CCK for Netscape 7.1.

OTOH, this is good news for those who are reliant on AOL add-ins, although most people I know try to strip out such annoyances as AIM and integrated Netscape WebMail.

Could the "Save the Netscape Browser" petition have possibly influenced this decision?

If this news is truly legit, it's time to uncork the champagne! Of course, I'm not sure what effect a new Netscape release will have. Mozilla has already tweaked its focus to encompass end users. Many ex-Netscape users, myself included, have transitioned to Mozilla as their browser of choice since the last Netscape version was released last year, and I don't know if all of us will be willing to switch back to a browser that, despite its quality and name recognition, is updated less frequently and contains AOL marketing paraphernalia. Of course, if Netscape and Mozilla could possibly muster a one-two punch to even slightly knock Internet Explorer out of the sole spotlight, I should be cheering.

Yes it does. The person who started the petition has also sent AOL the request and is the one who heard about a upcoming new version of Netscape.

If these reports of a forthcoming new Netscape release, turns out to be an elaborate (but
cruel) April Fool's joke, IMHO the person responsible, needs to be taken outside and shot!

Is that a spoofed Netscape 8.0 useragent string (better not be) or is it for real?

Here's a link I saw in Mozillazine's note about this topic. The San Jose Mercury posted this article on the 22nd. Sounds like AOL may have wised up to the fact it's not hard to repackage an already great browser (Mozilla).

TBH, that's very unlikely. But considering the news we've just heard, who knows?

Mind you, updates to the old Ns4.x series were overseen by Sun Microsystems
so in the (really very unlikely) event of Netscape Communicator 4.81 being
released, then it won't be officially released by either Netscape or AOL.

Eitherway, I'm hoping Netscape 4.x remains consigned to internet history.
