From the screenshots of Mozilla 1.4.2 (for Mac), it is clearly it against Apple Human Interface Guidelines (HIG). Just like later versions of Mozilla (1.6 and 1.7RCs), none of those follows the HIG.

from http://www.mozilla.org/releases/mozilla1.4.2/README.html
What's New in Mozilla 1.4.2
| Quote: | * The NSS libraries in Mozilla have been upgraded to version 3.9. NSS 3.9 passes all the NISCC SSL/TLS and S/MIME tests (1.6 million test cases of invalid input data) without crashes or memory leaks.
* Mozilla on Windows now has support for NTLM authentication. This enables Mozilla to talk to MS web and proxy servers that are configured to use "windows integrated security".
* Mail now has junk-mail context menu items, a "delete junk mail" menu item and many other usability improvements for junk-mail controls.
* Pop-up blocking has been streamlined to improve usability.
* Users can now specify "blank page," "home page," or "Last page visited" for each of first window, new window and new tab.
* Users can now specify default font, size and color for HTML mail compose.
* Image blocking/disabling is now more flexible and users can "view image" to see blocked or not loaded images. |

Hi,
Maybe the next version of Netscape should be based off of this 1.4.2 release.
Just a thought.

If it makes sense, AOL won't do it. My thought.

What do you mean by that?

If AOL actually took part in actions that made sense, they wouldn't have squandered billions on mergers and acquisitions, they would have put more effort into promoting Netscape as a viable, safer, and cross-platform alternative to Internet Explorer, they wouldn't have rushed Netscape 6.0 out well before it was good enough to use, they would never have disbanded the Netscape browser development team altogether, and they would have released Netscape 7.11 and 7.12 versions based off of Mozilla 1.4.1 and 1.4.2 that would have abolished Netscape 7.1's troublesome bugs such as the resource leak.
FWIW, It's already been adequately established that the next Netscape release will be based off of Mozilla 1.7.

I don't see why AOL would release a new Netscape off of Moz 1.4.2 since the new Mozillas have new features.

So Mozilla.org is going to distribute a product that against Human Interface Guidelines?
and such product will be the next Netscape?
That worries me.

Netscape and Mozilla use XUL for a uniform apperance across all platforms. I'm glad Mozilla 1.x has not been given that aqua apperance!

since HIG is to make sure user will be familiar with the software, I see no need for netscape to change its interface, sure Mozilla can do so, but netscape should keep old one.

It is not to change the interface, but they did not comply the HIG.
There's a huge mistake in Netscape 7.1, Mozilla 1.4.2, Mozilla 1.6, Mozilla 1.7 RC1 ( those I've tested) in Mac OS X platform.
(I guess you guys can't see where those mistakes are...)
I won't repeat the same mistake (see this post ), I did all the detailed work, and ChrisI claimed the credit ... I am not going to address the detail here yet.

Thanks Alice,
Last time I check the Human Interface Guideline thing in Bugzilla, few months ago, I did not find the bits I was referring to.
I will make a proper documentation here when I have time. And as I mentioned in my pervious post, I will keep an eye on the credit issue.
