Support for a Classic ends here.
After talking to the folks at Digidesign. It appears that there is no chance of an update patch that will allow Digi 001/ Pro Tools 6.4 users to use Quick Time 7 or OSX 10.4 Tiger. To use Pro Tools on Tiger and future Mac OSes you will need to either upgade to an 002 or downgrade your hardware to an MBox.
I've had mine for about a year and a half, and I worked with one for a year before that. Initially at home I used it on Windows XP for the last 6 months on Panther. It suits my purposes perfectly and I'm able to get everything I need out of it. I will not be switching anytime soon. If I decide to get Tiger. I will get a second hard drive to boot it from, and keep Panther for my Audio purposes. I know the downgrade isn't worth it. I also don't feel as though the 002/ Pro Tools 6.9 is enough of an upgrade to justify a switch. Especially for nearly $1000. Perhaps, if the Digi 003/ Pro Tools 7.0 blows me away I will consider making that change. For now I think it would be upgrading for the sake of upgrading.
If your trying to decide whether to make the switch yourself. Here's some advice. Take stock of what it is you use your Audio gear for, and whether you in desperate need of features you don't have. i.e. Are you going to be doing a lot of work on DVD's, and need DVD quality Sample rates. Do you need that extra Post Production support Pro Tools 6.9 offers. Finally are you that Hard up for the extra 2dB of Headroom 6.9 offers.
If not, why change? The Digi 001 w/ PT 6.4 is exceptional technology. Groundbreaking. Remember that when the Beatles recorded all but one album they basically had a four track Tape Player to do it on. At least that's what it is in comparison. Editing on analog tape. Oh I can't even talk about it. The horror. You could feel your ulcer getting ready to burst.
So don't be so quick to jump ship. Panther is an excellent OS it's not like your getting stuck w/ Windows 3.1. Besides you have options to keep Panther and still use Tiger. We tend to get so caught up in the hype of every new piece of Hardware and software and how we can get the newest, fastest, and greatest version. We forget to ask ourselves if we need it? We forget that what we have right now is getting the job done quite efficiently? It's also familiar and stable. New hardware new software. Time has to be spent making sure they run stable and learning how to use them.
Despite the fact that I may still be 2 years from parting ways with my Digi 001. It's still a sad day. Simply because I can see the time on the horizon where I'm no longer using this wonderful piece of equipment that has been quite good to me.

it's very bad to hear that.
So Digidesign is owned by Avid, which also owns M-Audio?

Same problems here with the 001 etc...........
Now I've tried everything...everything....Apple even told me that what is happening is NOT POSSIBLE....
Completely erased the drive and reinstalled Panther....6.5.2 still has same issues....seems that NO MATTER WHAT ONE DOES, if you've ever had QT7 (with Panther or with Tiger) on your machine then the digidesign core audio driver is toast with various programs...I just want to get it back to where I was before.......
Again....apple claims its not possible that there is some part of QT7 or tiger left over after a complete erase and reinstall.....
After FOUR DAYS SOLID, I'm so upset I'm actually rebooting in 9.2.2 and I'm going to work in Logic Pro 6 and PT5 until these companies can get it together!!!!!!!
PLEASE let me know if you learn anything relevant!!!!
