I just installed the new version of Firefox (9.1), which works beautifully except for one thing, caused by Window$ XP:

1) I have many desktop shortcuts that are links that I used to use in M$ Internet Exploiter, which still work fine in Firefox and the site opens and loads, but each time I use one of these links, I get a Window$ error message telling me that Windows can't find the site (even though Firefox has by that time already found it and loaded it)

Does anyone know how to get windows to quit looking for the link when it doesn't need to? (I already disabled IE, and made Firefox my default browser), or at least to disable the pointless error messages?

OR, Does anyone know how to create a desktop shortcut to a website for Firefox to use, that won't cause Windows to go looking for the site?

OK, so the Mozilla forum server was down and I was impatient......

I just found the answer to my own question. So that anyone reading these doesn't waste time, and any others looking for this information, here's the problem, and the fix:

There is a bug pertaining to the way Firefox registers itself with Windows to handle URLs (http, https etc).

This can both result in two windows opening and/or a "url not found error", despite Firefox opening the URL just fine.

Looks like their may be a problem with the way Firefox registers itself to handle urls in Windows or an issue with DDE messaging.

Solution:

1. Open Explorer
2. Select Tools and then Folder Options
3. Select the File Types tab
4. Select Extension: (NONE), File Type: HyperText Transfer Protocol
5. Click Advanced toward the bottom of the window
6. In the Edit File Type window, select open and click Edit
7. Clear the DDE message box (which should contain "%1")
8. Click OK, Click OK
9. Repeat for File Type: HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy

I performed this workaround, and it solved the problem
