04 Jan, 2005 9:25 pm PrefBar 3.0 Out [sdp=50522]

Version 3.0 of Prefbar was released on 2004-12-26.
Quote:
The original preferences toolbar was designed to give the user more control over the pages viewed, and to allow the power browser to use mozilla with greater ease and efficiency than ever before. The PrefBar2 takes this concept to a whole new level; along with the standard preference checkboxes, the new version includes utility buttons, user agent spoofing, web links, and more, served on a fully customizable toolbar with a side of white rice.
.....
The current version of the PrefBar is 3.0, build 20041224. It should work with Mozilla 1.0 to 1.7.5 and Firefox 1.0+.

The changelog for version 3 is
Quote:
Changelog 3.0

* Finally fixed Bug 7702 "prefbar broken on Suse 9.x w/Moz 1.7.2/1.7.3" (Manuel Reimer)
* It's now possible to disable the display of PrefBar in Popup windows (Manuel Reimer)
* Rewrote whole rendering Code to make menus possible (Manuel Reimer)
* Overflow Menu for PrefBar (now Buttons not longer disappear) (Manuel Reimer)
* PrefBar Menu (full PrefBar functionality even without Toolbar) (Manuel Reimer)
* Drag and Drop Support in the Preferences Window! (Manuel Reimer)
* The Updater now not longer overwrites your self-defined button labels (Manuel Reimer)
* UserAgent now also gets resettet if you close Mozilla with File->Exit (Manuel Reimer)
* New Preferences Window for Firefox (now I not longer have to manage two preferences systems) (Karsten Düsterloh, Manuel Reimer)
* Reset-Button in Preferences Dialog (Manuel Reimer)
* New Buttons:
o Resize Menulist (Manuel Reimer)
o Clear Cookies (Manuel Reimer)
o Save Page (Manuel Reimer)
* The Buttons "Size 640x480", "Size 800x600" and "Size 1024x768" have been removed as they are replaced with the Resize Menulist (Manuel Reimer)

I have installed PrefBar 3.0 on Mozilla 1.7.5 on two systems running Windows XP. It, so far, seems to work OK. On the one system where it is installed under the profile (instead of under the program directory), the "What's New" button does not seem to work.

Thanks. and, to anyone else, don't try the trick from the Netscape Browser.
And, best of all, download the .xpi file, and use it for everything you have.
The update is so smooth that it is almost scary.

I can't seem to download it at all. When I click on the download button (or the install entire package button) nothing happens. This is not very user-friendly.

I find it quite easy to deal with, except that it is a two step operation.
1. http://prefbar.mozdev.org/installation.html
2. dowmload the .xpi file.
If I work with the .xpi file, which I download to the Desktop, I can drag and drop it on top of the desired shortcut. It has the effect of opening the program, and, then the installation begins. Restart the program, and you are done.
Why do I do this? First of all, it works. Secondly, I use one .xpi download, and I do the same operation with NS7.2, Moz1.7.5 and FF1.0, saving me the bother of hunting for the site.. And, I can use the same file for anything else which I may want to use at a later date.
It is unbelievaly smooth. I am asked if I want to update the buttons, before opening the program, and that's about it.

For some inexplicable reason it will not work for me. I've followed the directions and tried downloading the xpi file but no joy.

Note, threads merged.

I am in AOL9.0, where things are often pretty weird, and I found out that I could left click, and save to the AOL Download folder. Or, right click, Save Target as. This way I am presented with the run-of-the-mill Windows box, where I can select a download location.
I have not tried direct installation.

It would be nice if Firefox will be capable to autoupdate it itself. That does`t seem to work.
Old Prefbar uninstalled manually and version 3 installed without problems.

Great! I don't even remember if I read about it somewhere, or it was discovered by mistake. I am pretty sure that I was dragging the .xpi file which shows up in the bottom left corner to another folder, for storage, and I let go too soon. It was a Netscape7.x, and it opened Netscape, and asked me to Install or Cancel. what could I say?

Old Prefbar uninstalled manually and version 3 installed without problems.

That is because of the extension number difference, if the number remained the same it would do that and uninstall the old one and add the new verison

James,
no objection to your new thread. However, a word a caution. Your subject would have been enough for removal from the newsgrop, at other sites. At you site, the thread was sunmmarilily closed, with no second chance given. You know, those typical subjects like: Netscape 7.2.
I know that you know better, but make sure that you give some description. Many people by-pass poorly described posts.
In any event, I am happy to help.

James,

Don't worry. We are a friendly community. However, we do appreciate a descriptive subject (title).
I do understand that sometimes people click the wrong button instead. I've been working on the some adjustment to avoid confusing.

I will merge or move this thread later, when I have time.
