16 Nov, 2004 4:23 pm UFAQ.org bans and cybersquats SillyDog701 [sdp=47757]

SillyDog701 has been a great Netscape user supporting website since 1999 starting with Netscape Browser Archive. Recently, SillyDog701 expanded the Netscape related support to MozInfo701 and Switch Project.

I have just noticed that UFAQ.ORG has banned my access to ufaq.org website. This is what I receive when I visit UFAQ.ORG today

I have asked in Netscape newsgroup (secnews), and all other people can access UFAQ.ORG

It is a shame that they are locking out another Netscape supporting website, SillyDog701. Instead of uniting Netscape supporting sites, they opt to divide and making enemies.

SillyDog701 will respond to their action.

Wellander was banned from logging into SillyDog701 Message Centre for reasons explained in Why was wellander suspended?. He had a number of chances and been properly warned.

Wellander is not banned for reading SillyDog701, SillyDog701 Message Centre, MozInfo701, and all information available to public.

UFAQ.ORG banned Antony's access to entire UFAQ.ORG site.

So the story so far...

this morning (8:16AM, my time) I posted following (together to the netscape.netscape7.windows (Netscape secnews):
(message link)
Quote:
Well, I don't visit UFAQ often, but I check it out this morning.
What happened to ufaq.org?

I tried http://ufaq.org/
and http://www.ufaq.org/

None works.

OR shall I ask did they ban me?

And an attachment of the screenshot you see in the first post of this thread.

There are a number of messages following this discussion.

I made an official response to being banned. (10:25 AM)

SillyDog701 ( http://sillydog.org/ ) has been a great Netscape user supporting website since 1999 starting with Netscape Browser Archive ( http://sillydog.org/narchive/ ). Recently, SillyDog701 expanded the Netscape related support to MozInfo701 ( http://moz.sillydog.org/ )and Switch Project ( http://switch.sillydog.org/ ).

It is a shame that they are locking out another Netscape supporting website, SillyDog701. Instead of uniting Netscape supporting sites, they opt to divide and making enemies.

It's been confirmed that my IP address has been banned by ufaq.org

As usual, SillyDog701 has never banned anyone from accessing SillyDog701 and retrieve information from SillyDog701.

However, this incident showed the ridiculous actions by ufaq.org. And SillyDog701 decided to respond by not banning back in return.

This is an official announcement.

That's right. They are free to ban me, but I won't ban them back in return. SillyDog701 is a great Netscape supporting website, and SillyDog701 believes denying any person's access to obtain information is not a wise choice.

SillyDog701 is always trying to build a community with many other websites. Netscape does not have many users or communities. With only a few major user supporting sites reminding, we shall all work together to make Netscape/Mozilla users. It is really disappointing that some of them chose to compete and cut off the friendship.

SillyDog701 can't control other websites, but as always, SillyDog701 strives to provide a better Netscape/Mozilla community.

There isn't anything wrong with the UFAQ. I had been having some
security problems that included your particular IP block and I denied
access to the entire block. I specifically removed YOUR IP from the deny
block just now. So, try again ...

Antony, why didn't you just email me instead of all this tirade and crap.

Read my reply of a few minutes ago with the explanation. You weren't
banned by any means, just a simple mistake ... sheesh !!!

Putting my explicit IP address (NOT a block of IP, verified) into their ban list is a mistake, of course, it was a big mistake.

I find a 'mistake of a security-related nature' a bit hard to believe. I was thinking more along the lines of some radical redesign project that they didn't want you to know about until days or even weeks later, so that you wouldn't have been able to compare theirs to yours. But, I'm speculating again; I'll never learn to accept coincidence.

Antony:

Don't worry about it. You don't need some of the people that
use those groups anyway.
Some are so nasty and sarcastic.

I think Jay would have told you if he was banning you.
He is usually up front, but perhaps one of the incompetent Champs
did....you know what some are like, forget about it.

P.S. I think I will try Netscape 7.2 Might as well, I have tried all the others:)
I hope I don't have to use AOL tho'

We'll see what happens now that the explanation has been posted and hopefully we'll see an apology posted on SillyDog701. Antony has always been welcomed on the UFAQ.
Jay is always welcome to use SillyDog701, and he's the one should apology.

I saw the banning list of UFAQ.ORG, I know my IP address was in that list explicitly (not in IP block as he claimed). As for how I get such information, I shall keep in secret to save Jay's face.

AOL is not required to use Netscape 7.2. However, you will get an AOL icon on the desktop which you can easily delete when you install Netscape 7.2. Netscape 7.2 is much better than the old 6.x versions. Give it a try! If you need any help, feel free to create a new thread.

Antony, yours is a personal matter, and should be treated accordingly.
This is not a Netscape/Mozilla/Firefox issue.
But, being yor site, I suppose that you can do whatever you want. It is not a learning experience for anyone.

ufaq.org not just banned Antony (unbanned later), but also censors the word SillyDog701
