Gregor,
I used the default settings and on two WinXP installations so I would not say that the problem was between chair and keyboard

So some positive feedback on Netscape Browser Prototype 2, I took it to my workplace computer (just for fun I was pretty sure it will not start,/crash/not work properly what ever), which is Windows 2000 and I dont have admin rights there. And guess what? It worked properly even the IE engine function so I tried to use the companies proprietary IE only intranet db solution under it and than to my big surprise it worked and went even faster than in IE and AvanBrowser (which I used for it before), with some hours I found out that some functions of the db dont work/dont work properly but still for my work it is a big positive that it goes quicker here -as it saves my time.

Should this mean that those canadians even messed up the Firefox/Gecko engine?
I am afraid yes and also that the new Netscape (maybe 8) would not show pages same as Mozilla and Firefox. |
I don't understand this, at all.
But, an observation, which I would like to have commented is that while the IE View extention of firefox1.0 will ask me to open IE, which is not allowed by Zone Alarm, the IE View in this prototype opens an IE View page right in it.
And, it is not just the Trident plugin. What is going on?
On the surface, it looks as if the IE View extentiomn is an external app., while the Netscape Browser prototype makes it internal, as if it is embedded.

IE View simply launches an instance of Internet Explorer with the URL of the page you were viewing at the time.
The Netscape prototype is embedding MSHTML using nptrident.dll.
Of course, if you had a decent firewall, you'd be able to prevent MSHTML from accessing the internet, not just an executable file.

Is the 2nd prototype using the Firefox 1.0 word searching tool, or the simple searching feature?

Netscape Prototype 2 is really fast.
Finally, I managed to install a copy of Netscape Prototype 2 on a real Windows machine, instead of running it under Virtual PC for Mac.
It's quite fast.

24 Jan, 2005 10:19 pm "Popafter" problems |
[sdp=51831] |
|
I had noticed that NS Browser was allowing what I call "popafters", i.e. something like a popup, but after closing NS Browser. I did not make much out of this, but I decided to spend some time on this, because the popafters were coming up with nauseating regularity. I spent well over one hour doing nothing but making changes in the options, closing NS Browser, and then opening it again. It started with Error Guard, and then with a page with no content, showing ar.atwola.com redirect and the end "casalemedia.com".
I found out that casalemedia is an outfit from Toronto, ca. I had set to block, permanently, cookies ar.atwola.com, atwola.com, c.casalemedia.com and casalemedia.com. The thing has not stopped coming up.
According to the casalemedia.com, they recommended to turn off javascript to prevent such behavior, and it worked in some case, but not consistently. A mediaplex ad was also popping up. I guess that I messed with the settings enough that I can't sign on the Community Forum.
The behavior is similar to that noticed with FF1.0 preview release, I think.
In case someone else has noticed anything like this, please comment.
I am, just about, done, testing this beast.

I am too stubborn to give up. And, I found the problem, which shows once again AOL's naivete and/or sneakiness. Just check Site Controls|Content, and one can see all sort of things, like allowing popups, Display like Internet Explorer, etc. And, unlike Netscape7.x, I don't see a way to delete an item. And, then what is "default". And, it is javascript, but for default only, for now.

Is there any indication when this prototype will be made available to the general public? I tried early on to become part of the test group, but evidentally came in a bit late. I'm curious about its future and when the "rest of us" will get our shot at it, so to speak.

I see what you mean. I have been having problems with repeatedly seeing pop-ups coming from "ar.atwola.com" even though I thought I had it blocked.
After reading what you mentioned about the options available in the "Site Controls" I took another look at what was there for the "ar.atwola.com" site and discovered that there where several ( and it surprised me how many ) options I could select to block that site. I enabled several more and hope that it will no longer appear.
One thing I've got to say about this Netscape browser prototype is that they have provide the user with a lot of options to fine tune their browsering. Probably too many for the novice/casual/"care less" ( pun intended) user. They probably need an "Advanced User" option to make a lot of these options available rather that make them available to every new user. The tab options is another area with an extreme number of options.

Mercuial should make a less confusing tab option dohickey. Even I saw it confusing. They could have a seperate window with tabs to make it less confusing.

Did any of you tried Netscape P2 with the combination with Adobe Reader?
I am repeatedly halting this beast when a Pdf file is loading in browser window and any of the key is pressed at that moment....
