[sdp=50667] |
|
This is the continuum of the Netscape Browser Prototype thread. We started a new thread to make posting easier on the Prototype 2.
Netscape Prototype 2 is now available from Netscape Browser Review programme .
Netscape Browser Prototype will be based on Firefox 1.0, instead of previous Netscape Prototype based on Firefox 0.9.4. According to Netscape Product Manager, only the code base was changed.
Original thread, Netscape Browser Prototype , is still available for archiving purpose.
changed to normal post, please use Netscape 8 pre-Beta to continue our discussion. 18 Feb 2005

Joji announced it one step before me, (Virtual PC is not that fast.) Thanks Joji.
The new Netscape Prototype 2 contains a few performance improvements.
| Quote: | ATTENTION It is highly recommended that you uninstall and delete your existing Netscape Browser profile. You can find your profile in the "Application Data" directory, which is typically found at C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Netscape. The folder "Application Data" is hidden on many systems, and it can be unhidden by changing "Folder Options" in the "Tools" menu of Windows File Explorer. |

I do feel quite a bit faster in this Prototype 2 compared to previous Prototype, at least, the screen response is better. Perhaps, it was that I am running it under Virtual PC.

As for the "blue" new theme (proposed), it won't be happen until the next release, methinks.

[sdp=50677] |

My install has defaulted the "home" to:
http://home.netscape.com/bookmark/7_2/home.html
|http://channels.netscape.com/ns/browsers/browsing.jsp#br2
which is currently timing out and when it did work seems to be the home for the Netscape 7.2 browser.
Prior to installing I removed all old folders and profiles.

They did mention that this version would have no design changes except for the use of the FireFox 1.0 release code.
Probably want to make sure it works the "same" before attempting any changes.

Since the Theme was the last of my concern, the first concern was with those stupid tabs. I have yet to figure out why the Tab controls are the way they are, I finally unchecked the "load in the background", and, I can finally can open a window. I would expect to open a window and create a Tab, not just the latter.
But, I am getting ahead of myself. I wanted to bring my Personal Toolbar folder, after kicking out all the extras, and I did the usual selection as Personal Toolbar folder, to no avail. I, finally, saw in the navigational customization, two bookmarks items. I dragged and dropped the "Bookmarks Toolbar Items", and I got what I wanted. The Tabs showed up as usual from my saved Tabs. And, Mail is fine, opening TB.
At this point I am almost ok, except for the single entry in downloads, of Windows Media .wmv files to open with AOL Communicator Media Player, which I don't have. So, I removed the item, just in case.

Just a short impression from me, as this is the first netscape preview I try. I skipped the first one.
I haven't payed too much attention to all the news that came after the first release. Except for the double browsing engine they use inside netscape. I must say I hope there will be a bugfix to get this insane idea out of Netscape. I like to use a browser that doesn't use the IE engine as I find this engine to be one major security risk. By giving the 'normal' user a incorrect idea of a trustable browser, the risk of infection is higher.
Second is the theme. UGLY. SillyDog mentioned the looks of the browser will get a faselift later on the development, but man this is terrible. Please give me some kind of seperators or something to show what parts belong to each other. And why is the menu aligned to the right side? I'm using Windows, Windows has a default, use the default.
I got some other points on the interfase, but I will get to them after they change they start working on it.
The pop Up blocker is way too difficult to use for an averedge user.
How do I add a bookmark that opens in de sidebar? The classic add to sidebar javascript doesn't work and the bookmark properties don't have the needed option. Even worse, where's my bookmarks toolbar? I don't want the sidebar to show my bookmarks, I want sidebar pages to show in there.
When I'm on a page and I want a new tab, I'll hit ctrl-enter (or some icon). This new tab should NOT show the same page I was on when I requested the tab. This is an inlogical feature comming from IE. This slows down the browsing, slows down the opening of a new tab.
Well, that will be the first I have to say about this. There will be lots of great features in this browser I didn't talk about, but that's not what's important at this moment.

For some reason the Compu server appears to always be down when I try to download. Is anyone else having this difficulty? Any tips?

Is Prototype 2 available to new testers, or is it still a closed group?

Well, MozInfo701 reported Netscape Browser Review programme with the registration code on 16th November. We received great interests on the discussion, and the registration ended few days after. Sorry, you missed out.
