31 Jan, 2005 8:06 am new PowerBooks, faster, more storage space, and cheaper [sdp=52132]

Apple's new PowerBook G4 now upto 1.67GHz.

The jump in processor speed from 1.5GHz to 1.67GHz also includes faster graphic chips, faster hard drives, and a faster 8X SuperDrive.

12-inch models
1.5GHz PowerPC G4 processor with Velocity Engine, 512K SRAM on-chip L2 cache, 167MHz system bus
512MB of PC2700 (333MHz) DDR SDRAM; support for up to 1.25GB

15-inch models
1.67GHz PowerPC G4 processor with Velocity Engine, 512K SRAM on-chip L2 cache, 167MHz system bus
512MB of PC2700 (333MHz) DDR SDRAM; support up to 2GB

17-inch model
1.67GHz PowerPC G4 processor with Velocity Engine, 512K SRAM on-chip L2 cache, 167MHz system bus
512MB of PC2700 (333MHz) DDR SDRAM; support up to 2GB

The storage is now upto 100GB and all in 5400 rpm.
Superdrive is now 8X and can write DVD+R media as well.

15-inch and 17-inch models have dual-link DVI functionality support for connecting to 30-inch Apple Cinema HD Display.

And they are US$100 cheaper then previous models.

This update could well be the last PowerBook G4 before the PowerBook G5. However things like this is hard to predict. (Note: SillyDog701 is not a rumour site.)

More about PowerBook G4,

All models now include Bluetooth Enhanced Data Rate (EDR) (also known as Bluetooth 2.0), with up to three times the speed of previous Bluetooth versions. EDR offers a maximum data transfer rate of 3 Mbps, compared to the 1Mbps speed for standard rate Bluetooth.

Other new features:
New trackpad with scrolling capability and Sudden Motion Sensor technology.

OK, it looks like I'll be getting a 15" Powerbook, after lots of waiting for the price to come down even the slightest bit. But.. maybe I should wait for the Powerbookook G5, since the future seems to be more and more 64-bit as we speak. Well, lots of decisions; I'll have to see which one will cost me less in the long run. That means will it cost me more to buy now and upgrade later, or wait and buy so I don't have to upgrade for awhile longer... Well, I don't know what to say, although I did have my eye on a 64-bit AMD64 notebook, if I can find one. Lets just hope they roll out the G5 before I buy an AMD64.

According to C|net News.com's Apple on G5 PowerBook: Not so fast, Apple is fully aware Mac users want PowerBook G5, but the technology difficulties is still hard to challenge.

Hmm, looks good. Smile

I wouldn't mind seeing the option for faster graphics (Mobility Radeon 9800 or X800), or the option for a 7200 RPM laptop hard disk.

Given that the G5 runs very hot (like a P4), I'm suprised Apple hasn't had IBM design them a mobile processor that is a lot cooler to run, like what Intel has done with the Pentium-M.

I am waiting for my NEW Powerbook 17" to be delivered (should only be a couple of days now). I have got the one with very top spec (and I mean it). You see I didn't have to pay for it, my mum bought it for me. The spec is so sweet! Cool My Powerbook 17" was ordered before the NEW one came out. But I had still not received it, so they upgraded it to the new one. In fact Apple sent me email saying I might even be able to get some money back! I suppose it was ordered at a very good time! Wink

But I read somewhere that Tiger is due to be released around March 28 2005, so I suppose I will have to fork out for that though. Evil or Very Mad

My sister is also getting a pink iPod mini for her birthday (which is tomorrow). On the Apple Store UK Website they are currently doing FREE laser engraving on all iPods! I don't think we will have received it by tomorrow though. Crying or Very sad
