17 Feb, 2005 1:05 pm Navigator or Browser? |

I have mixed feelings about what I have seen on that page and subpages. Are they really going to call it "Browser"? That smells like MS. Why they dont call it Netscape Navigator 8.0 that would attract old netscapeers. And also the light blue theme (at least from the preview image) dont seem symphatetic to me. Its too light and too plastic (XP Disneyland look -how awfull). Hopefully the real full version would be better and will pay some respect to the good old NN. See you later navigator!

I did check browsers.netscape.com earlier today, and I know that it used to redirect to the link given above, and that page redirected to the Netscape 7.2 Download Channel page. Now it looks like they finally did something with it!
Anyway, nice new layout on the page. It looks a bit more like the NS6 days of Netscape's homepage, eh?
From the looks of things, there's no recent modifications (judging by the FTP dates on everthing) on all of Netscape's servers.

Hi everyone,
As you may have read, the general public beta has been pushed back a couple of weeks due to some bugs which we aren't yet comfortable with the general public experiencing. However, we appreciate everyone's help from the prototype to now, so we would like to give you guys a preview of what we will be releasing to the masses soon. Enjoy!

And would you share it also with us who are because of various (unimportant reasons) not members at the moment?
Or maybe would you be so kind to evaluate (my) writing to be members there. Thank you very much.

The theme looks mixed up, kind of like a plastic Aqua.
But I still like it.
I've heard that there are lots of bug issues.
They call it "Browser" because it only has the browser component, unlike Netscape 7.2, which also has Mail, Composer, and all that...

There still seems to be installer issues with this version of the Netscape Browser that I first reported on November 30, 2004 with the original prorotype version.

The install process was a like a piece of pie. The download was quite fast.

Thanks for the screenshot. I will install Netscape 8 pre-Beta shortly.
SillyDog701 Message Centre's theme matches the theme of Netscape 8 pre-Beta well

They have posted this on the private message board, I assume? I can't seem to find it anywhere else.
/* Off-topic, for my own goodwill
If anybody from Netscape is reading this:
PLEASE, LET ME BACK IN THE FORUM, this would be the only Netscape release I've ever missed. I've even got my hands on 0.5.6+ and 0.6.4+ by unmentionable means, but this one is definitely lost to me...

I uninstalled the Prototype v2 and removed the entire C:\Documents and
Settings\Alice\Application Data\Netscape folder to Backup, so I would get a clean install. Was asked what to migrate during the new version's install, and I chose Firefox 1.0 data this time. NO passwords were migrated (importing password data later on, from Mozilla 1.7.5 didn't work either). Has ANYONE gotten passwords to either migrate over or import into any of the Prototypes? I had the same complaint about the earlier versions.
Cookies and bookmarks migrated fine from Firefox 1.0, including Live Bookmarks (RSS feeds), which are working.
AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) is integrated into this Netscape Browser version.

P.S. There's a MozillaZine talkback article on the Netscape 8.0 Pre-Beta Release:
