Apple Computer announced the release of Mac OS X 10.4 'Tiger' will go on sale Friday, 29th April.
Two major new features of Tiger are Spotlight - Apple's new desktop search technology, Spotlight, to search the contents of documents, e-mail, images, contacts, photos, calendars and applications, and Dashboard - small mini 'widgets' that display information such as stock quotes, news and weather information, and more. Apple will ship 14 widgets with Mac OS X 10.4 'Tiger'.
The price of Tiger is US$129. (Family Pack for US$199 that includes a single-residence, five-user license.) Pre-order available now.
Hardware requirement:
RAM: 256MB minimum.
PowerPC G3, G4 or G5 processor and built-in FireWire.
HDD: 2.0 GB space minimum. (3.5GB if installing XCode 2)

Tiger also includes a new version of the Safari RSS web browser that includes a built-in RSS feed to track web site for RSS news.
The new operating system also will include an updated version of iChat, which supports the new H.264 video codec for improved picture quality. Users will now be able to create audio conferences with up to 10 users and video conferences with up to 4 people in a 3-D virtual conference room.
Tiger's new Automator workflow application will let users easily automate repetitive tasks without complex programming. Users can select from a library of more than a hundred customisable actions and drag and drop them to create an automated workflow.

Thanks for the news. Mac OS 10.4 "Tiger" will undoubtedly contain plenty of convenient new features and advanced technology.
Of course, Mac users won't need to upgrade to "Tiger" to have a web browser capable of reading RSS feeds. This functionality has been implemented in Mozilla Firefox since version 1.0 PR, and it can run on all versions of Mac OS X, not just the latest.

Hmm, interesting. I wonder why one would need to have built-in FireWire(IEEE 1394) to install this operating system.

Looks like the lowest supported G3 iMac for installing Mac OS X 10.4 is the slot loading one,
which could mean that I may have to use XPostFacto in order to be able to install it on
my Bondi Blue Revision B 266Mhz G3 iMac. If that doesn't work, then that computer is
going to become a Linux machine, running the PPC version of Kubuntu instead.
As for the apparent necessity for FireWire, it looks like both of my beige PowerMac G3's
will effectively be out of the picture for installing the latest version of Mac OS X as well.
Looks like I'll have to buy a Mac mini with Tiger pre-installed to get the newest Mac OS!
And I've just noticed this . . .

True. However, there are other stunning features such as the new iChatAV allowing 4 people video chatting in a 3-D way, and the improved QuickTime 7.
I will order it.

The new CoreImage and CoreAudio technologies look very interesting. Sort of a mix of Microsoft is/has done with Avalon and DirectX.

I intend to get it for the iBook, but I will wait until after 10.4.1 is released.
I have always been leery about OS upgrades.

It would be most likely be the same retail box, but you will need to download the 10.4.1 Updater yourself.

Unfortunately, no.
Unless you purchased a new Mac after 12th April 2005 that came with Panther, you would be qualified for Up-to-date program  . It will cost you US$9.95 for shipping and handling cost.

 I got my Tiger!
I received my Tiger from my local Mac reseller. They gave a spotlight (torch) as a gift. The Tiger retail box contains: Mac OS X Tiger (includes Xcode2) Install DVD, Welcome to Tiger, Installation and Setup Guide, Software License Agreement, Software Coupon, AppleCare Service and Support Guide, .Mac guide, and a trial copy of iWork 05.
I already bought my copy of iWork'05 when it released late January this year.

You certainly were fast. Mac OS X 10.4 was only released today!
By comparison, I don't think I have never used, let alone bought a copy of, any major release of an operating system (Mac OS or Windows) until after it's a year or more old.
