I've just attempted to update NSB to 8.0.1 twice . . . first with the net installer, then with
the full installer. So, why does the UA still show that I have 8.0 installed and not 8.0.1?

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20050512 Netscape/8.0

SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

20 May, 2005 6:31 am Usefull page to test NS8's user agent string [sdp=57472]

Now testing 8.0's UA string before updating it to 8.0.1 with German-located page
http://gemal.dk/browserspy/basic.html called "BrowserSpy".

It says

Quote:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20050512 Netscape/8.0

when examinig line UserAgent containing UA variable.

Updated information: Netscape 8.0.1 installed to this test machine:

It says

Quote:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20050519 Netscape/8.0.1

Yes, I'm aware of SD701 UserAgent string thread, and I have used it too naturally, but that would be for internal testings with IE engine and Gecko engine to avoid multiple postings.

Edit 20-May-05: corrected one typo and added 8.0.1 UA string -Juha-Matti

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20050512 Netscape/8.0

Thanks Antony!
Just to confirm with other words that selecting link Trouble downloading? doesn't open any Help page, but a page http://browser.netscape.com/ns8/download/download_alt.jsp (alt=alternative download package??) containing text

Quote:
If you are having trouble installing Netscape 8.0.1 using our download manager, you can download the full installer below.

Underlining at 'full installer' done by me.

When uninstalling a previous Netscape Browser 8.0, this file remains in the directory C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape Browser after uninstallation process:

install.log

It is safety to remove this file, or the whole directory "Netscape Browser" before installing a new 8.0.1 version. However, when examining this file I founded something interesting:
Code:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
http://update-spui.netscape.com/update/safetynet.2005.05.19.xpi  --  2005-05-20 02:02:27
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

     SafetyNet Update (version 0.9.6)
     ----------------

     ** initInstall: 0
     [1/3]   Replacing: C:\PROGRA~1\Netscape\NETSCA~1\defaults\sitecontrols\03-spylist.dat
     [2/3]   Replacing: C:\PROGRA~1\Netscape\NETSCA~1\defaults\sitecontrols\02-phishlist.dat
     [3/3]   Replacing: C:\PROGRA~1\Netscape\NETSCA~1\defaults\sitecontrols\providers.txt

     Install completed successfully  --  2005-05-20 02:02:42

This is a part of Netscape Browser's process updating Site Control white lists and black lists every hour. However, you can change the update period from Options / Site Controls / Trust Preferences menu.

This update process is called as SafetyNet Update and it is based to .xpi packages named as

2005.05.19-patch23.xpi, i.e. yyyy.mm.dd-patchnn.xpi

There is a server http://update-spui.netscape.com/update/ too, but only Netscape itself has access to that server.

netscape 8.01 does not install on a pentium233 with 128 mb of ram.
pop up box says it does not meet the min requirements.
on my pentium 266 192 mb it could install but i did not bother to finish the installation.
if netscape does not know the min requirements the program is untrustworthy.

Your first system seems to meet the requirements for Netscape 8.0. You have enough RAM, but it may be getting hung up with the processor. Netscape 8.0's installer seems to be set up in a way that it checks for the exact requirements. If the installer finds that you don't meet the exact requirements somewhere, it will show you the dialog box saing that you don't meet minimum requirements, and the setup will terminate.

BTW, here are the system requirements for Netscpae 8.0:

downloaded the full version from sillydog.
thats when it happened.
just before downloaded nsb-setup.exe 297 kb
there it says it meets the requirements.
do you have any idea whats happening.
i like the full version better since i can burn it to disc.
now if the program is downloaded from the nsb-setup.exe 297 kb
what will happen. Will an error message appear after.

I've just attempted to download and install Netscape 8.0.1, but I've still got Netscape 8.0.

WHERE is the download for Netscape 8.0.1? All I keep getting is 8.0. What gives?

Greg,

The full installer for Netscape 8.0 and 8.0.1 have the same file name, nsb-install-8-0.exe. You may have both files downloaded, but are executing the wrong one. Try downloading Netscape 8.0.1, available from SillyDog701's FTP server by the file name nsb-install-8-0-1.exe.

That did the trick, thanks.

I've finally had an opportunity to try out Netscape 8.0.1. To run Netscape 8, I had to have it installed on another system, then copy out Netscape 8's directory to an archive, and extract that to my computer. A similar process was done for other me to run other versions of the Netcape 8 on this system.

My report:
On first load of Netscape 8, I was asked if Netscape wanted to import settings from other browsers. I chose "No." Then Netscape 8.0.1 itself loaded. I was then presented with a dialog asking if I wanted to make Netscape my default browser. I chose "No." Soon after, Netscape crashed. I repeated this again, choosing "No" again. Another crash. I thought the crashes had somthing to do with my "unofficial" archived version. I tried a third time, but this time choose "Yes." Choosing this, Netscape 8 didn't crash.

Now, I fianlly had a chance to try Netscape 8.0. First, Netscape loaded three tabs, all Netscape-related sites, using the IE rendering option. I then went went in the the Perferences/Options and set all site control options to the "Firefox" option.

Next, the default user-interface seems somewhat less cluttered than the prototype and beta, and the "Fusion" theme seems more refined than in the beta. I removed all the "Security Center" icons via the toolbar in the "Customize Toolbar" dialog. Then, I "hid" the Personal toolbar, as I don't want to look at all the IMO unnecessary "junk" placed there by default. My next step was to change Netscape 8's theme from the default "Fusion" to the "Winscape" theme. The "Winscape" theme seems to reflect all system colors, except menus which retain a flat, white-look. The theme itself seems to be a mix of "Winstripe," Mozilla Firefox's default theme, and the "Classic" theme in Mozilla App Suite.

Now that I have Netscape 8 set up the way I want, with the "Winscape" theme, it has become a very usable browser.

That's all I have to say about Netscape 8.0.1 for now.

I just saw this on the Netscape Browser site. There are now new "Netscape NOW!" buttons available for Netscape 8. The five buttons have the light greenish-look of Netscape 8. Adding the buttons should be easy, as you just have to click the radio button next to your preferred button and the HTML code for the button is automatically generated.

Get the buttons...

Thanks Billy.
A nice new style of buttons from Netscape.
The only problem, these new Netscape Now! buttons are a bit too big for SillyDog701's templates.

The new buttons are ugly. Man, the buttons for 4.0 were better. AOL really screwed themselves they should of kept the Netscape team and company around, it couldn't of cost that much.

btw, how popular is the netscape.com portal? i wouldn't think anyone would see it unless they download netscape.
