I tried that registry fix last night, but when I went to where the upper and lower filters are supposed to be, they aren't there. I don't see any upper or lower filters anywhere in the registry.
I don't know if that is a problem or not, but I still can't get my cd-rom drive to work, and I tried all those suggestions I found about uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling them, rebooting, reinstalling, etc......
Does anyone have any more ideas? Any help would be appreciated.

I too, had the same problem. Erdiko, your advice solved the problem, many thanks.
I noticed this problem occured when I also tried to set up Itunes on my machine. I run service pack 2. An error message occurs which asks me to check I have admin rights before attempting to retry. I have admin rights, and now the quicktime logo is in the bottom right of the start bar, but does nothing and isn't present in add or remove programs.

Fantastic Erdiko,
This registry fix really saved my bacon.
Thought I would need to re-build as there was no way I could get the PC to see my DVD/CDROM no matter what I or any of the experts at work suggested I try. You pin pointed the problem and when I saw the suspect BsStor.sys in this registry entry I knew I had it 'Cracked'.
Well done, You convinced me to join this forum!!
Regards
Alastair

Erdiko...Thank you. I had been trying to solve the identical problem for 2 days, until I found your post. You saved me from having to reinstall over 60GB of data. Your solution worked perfectly.

In regards to the previous post about regedit not starting....
try one fo the following:
in start->run->open try typing "regedit /k" for "keep open"
or
in start->run->open type "cmd" and at the dos command prompt type "regedit"
this way if it errs out you can see the message......
ah another option is to just use the "regedt32" command...(and this "i" is supposed to be omitted....note that these files are also in your C:\windows\system32 folder....(ithink, but it is somewhere arround there)
now on to the main point of the thread.....I lost the ability to read certain disc's with both of my DVD-RW and DVD-ROM drives. I tried a solution like suggested in this forum (which can also be found on the microsoft site with alittle more detail) it eliminated the over abundance of upper and lower filters on my drives, which had been installed by the multiple CD/DVD burning applications I used....It worked...it cleared my drivers/filters...but I still had the problem with my drives....
I am currently figuring that while it cleared the filters and potentially "reinstalled" the corresponding drivers...it only reinstalled corrupt dreiver from my driver and/or dll cache..hence the persisting problem....
So I sought to have windows identify and replace any corrupt system files//(in this case I was interesting in the "cdrom.sys" and "sdfs.sys" and the imapi drivers.... but when I ran "sfc.exe" and it foudn corrupt files..it asked for my install CD....well my CD is not functioning so that won't work... enter this link "http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html"....this article outlines how to modify the reg to instruct "sfc" to load files off of your local disk. My corrupt drivers are now being replaced.....
Note: please rember to always save your reg before an edit....I suggest doing an "export" of the key you will change as a "hive"..

Erdiko - I have literally been trying for 6 months to fix this problem without reinstalling XP. All help desks I have gone to and even places where I paid a fee said the same thing. I just felt there had to be some way to do it and sure enough, you surfaced. I absolutely can't thank you enough. You have solved a huge headache for me.
