iv tryed downloading a new driver from lite-on but when i go to use it it says that the driver doesnt match, only for 1693s dvd ect which is wat i already have so only god or u can help me. any suggestions from any1 wiser than me would be greatly recieved!! Confused Confused Confused

02 May, 2006 9:25 am finally, something that works [sdp=73172]

Thanks erdiko, usually tips I find on the internet either never work or only partially work.

I had a user with two drives out on his HP xw6200. I was unable to run the "sfc /scannow" since it would ask me for an XP CD.

A quick search and I found this thread. I only was able to find the "LowerFilters" but deleting that did the trick.. at least enough for me to properly run the "sfc /scannow".

Now I look like a hero, thanks again dude.

Even though I don't use Windows XP, I've found this thread interesting to read, and wonder a few things:

1. What precisely causes this problem to happen to begin with?
2. Why have so many people been affected by it?
3. (OT) Why do nine out of ten people posting in this thread use Internet Explorer? Razz

please note Erdiko Sensei Smile advises deleting the values in the "lowerfilters" and "upperfilters" keys - if I read the post correctly.
I have seen another thread saying delete those actual "lowerfilters" and "upperfilters" keys themselves.

I tried the Erdiko way and it worked perfectly, then for some reason (and I am really sorry I don't remember why), the drives disappeared again. So then I deleted those keys themselves and voila.

PROBLEM IS NOW: I can't get Windows Media Player to work anymore, some conflict with Version numbers, which I cannot resolve with download, reboot, or update or anything! So can't burn CD/DVDs without WMP engine. But my DVD drives are still visible.

Did I delete too much!!???

-----in response to Andrew T----quoted below...

1. I've no idea what causes the problem in the first place it. It seemed to come 'out of the blue' - Windoze XP blue?. It seemed to come after installing 1) new Windows XP updates 2)some other piece of software which I can't remember.

2. It may be something to do with Windows update, but my judgement is based solely on ...well nothing! nothing too logical or technical anyway.

3. I guess this is the Windows/MS thread, and so IE's the default browser for users on that platform. Though I am one of the '9' (using MozFF), sometimes you have to use IE when certain functionality on the page you are browsing simply doesn't function.

Best,

03 May, 2006 8:00 am what causes the problem [sdp=73202]

Further to Andrew T's question about what causes the problem.
Well it seems that any installation of CD Burning/Playing type software.

I just installed a piece of Open Source software simply named 'CDBurnerXP' thinking it would override the WMP burning engine. this knocked out my drive again which meant I had to go back to RegEdit for them filters.

In Lowerfilters there's a value (PX20Help or is it PXHelp20?) that keeps reappearing anytime I install something to do with CD burning.

Still the burning side is not working, where the burning software says that writeable media needs to be inserted when there is blatantly a blank CD in there.
I am lost.
No WMP either which is a real pain as that seems to sit at the bottom of everything media related on XP Sad

I've joined just to add my thanks for this post of the upperfilters problem. It saved me buying a new drive as the otherwise helpful Ricoh help desk didn't know about it or think to mention it. Cheers.

Thanks erdiko,

Fantastic tip!

I've been hunting for a long time to a solution to this problem - and you had it!

Yes - as others have said here - I too searched and searched - even on the paid sites. I think I'll tell folks @ Dell about this (and/or NEC).

I knew the hardware was fine - as I have a 2nd HD which I use in this laptop - and when booting from that clean HD the DVD came up fine. The 1st HD has some corruption - and even replacing drivers (same ones from clean 2nd HD onto the 1st) didn't help. In fact, nothing helped apart from erdiko's tip.

Yes - I too joined this forum to pay my thanks.
