Received word of an unusual problem. Short of reformatting/reinstalling XP, I'm not sure of the answer.

When the PC boots up, the CD-ROM and DVD drives are not present. Going into the Device Manager displays the error icon for both devices. In trying to reinstall the driver, it displays a Code 39, and when the devices are removed (uninstalled), the system rebooted, the system detects the drives, attempts to install something, yet when they go back in the Device Manager, the Code 39 is still present.

Code 39:

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Since this involves the CD-ROM/DVD drives, the driver cannot be reloaded from the XP CD.

Short of wiping everything out and reinstalling XP again, is there a solution? A virus-scan and defrag did not report any issues.

The computer has two such devices, one is a CD-ROM, the other is a DVD, the same Code 39 comes up for both devices.

Opening "My Computer" does not display either device.

Try rebooting into Windows, and hope it will solve the problem. If that does not help, try rebooting into command line. (Holding something like F8 during booting.) And see if you can access to those.

If that still not help, check your booting screen (or BIOS) and see if CD-ROM and DVD-ROM are presented...

A decision was made to reformat and reinstall XP on the machine in question, and that apparently took care of the problem, as afterwards, the D and E icons (for the two drives) appeared afterwards.

Strange that you had that error with both of your optical drives. I've got both a DVD-Rom drive and a DVD/RW drive and I had my DVD/RW drive 'dissapear' in my computer with the same error. Simply repairing the Windows XP driver files with the "sfc /scannow"command and a reboot was enough to fix the issue.

I had a similar error, and the problem also showed on on the 'virtual drives' with the error in the device manager. I know that the drives work fine, and the virtual drives being messed up further proves it is some type of driver error. I uninstalled the drives.. rebooted, reinstalled the drivers, rebooted and still have the same error message.. EXCEPT the error code is 41, not 39.

While reformatting and reinstalling windows would probably fix the problem, it would be a lot easier to just fix this problem without going through migration of the settings for each user to the new installation, and installing the 50 GB worth of programs installed on the system. (and imagine activating a lot of them over again also (eg Adobe CS2, Acrobat 7, Install Shield 11, etc...)

To fix this problem, I performed the following:


Start Registry Editor (Start, Run and type in [tt]regedit[/tt] then click)

Find "[tt]UpperFilters[/tt]" and "[tt]LowerFilters[/tt]" (and "[tt]UpperFilters.bak[/tt]" "[tt]LowerFilters.bak[/tt]", if they exist) value under the following key in the registry, and delete it:

[tt]HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}[/tt]

Quit Registry Editor.

Reboot.

NOTE: You might need to reinstall any CD recording apps you have, if they start to not work completely, after doing this.

You saved me a few hours digging around the Microsoft Help Base.
This registry modification works fine. Even my mounted CD images come back as they were. This happened to me after I manually restored my registry to a few days before, through the recovery console. I had to restore my registry because some malware/adware was logging me off as soon as I logged on, even in safe mode.

It happens to me 3 months ago and I could not fix it, well I was not ready to reinstall XP..
Now It happens to me again on Friday after installing iTunes on my acer laptop running win2k (I had different error code 29 )

After 4 hours of trying to get my inlaw's cd/dvd back up, I stumbled across this thread. I'm usually reluctant to try these registry fixes, but I was at my wits end. I did exactly what Erdiko said, rebooted, and behold...CD and DVD are restored!

I just stumbled onto this forum doing a search, and it's really good to know that I'm not the only one having this same problem.

After trying to download and install a driver for my soundcard, I got some kind of system error, and after that, my cd-rom drive doesn't work anymore, and I get the "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing [Code 39]" message.

I'v been trying to fix the problem for four days now, with no success.

Tonight, I plan to try the registry fix that Erdiko mentioned, and see if it works. It sounds like it was pretty successful for everyone who tried it.
