Well, bad news to report.
I had this problem in my PowerBook's harddisk when I run Disk Utilities.
S.M.A.R.T. Status: Failing

Lucky, this PowerBook is still under warranty.

My 12 inch PowerBook G4, 1.33GHz, was bought with upgraded 80GB HDD @5400rpm (Apple's CTO).

This PowerBook was bought on 4th May 2004.

What am I doing now? backing up my hard disc... It's a very painful job.

Oh dear, that is not good. Things like this usually happen after the warranty has expired. It's a good
job your PowerBook warranty is still valid, so HDD replacement won't become an expensive chore.

It is.
Well, we all know that HDD is not that suitable for moving, and I do carry my PowerBook around (of course).

It will be free for me, except it might take up to 3 weeks for Apple to replace the HDD.

I am backing up the 80GB now. Just bought a 200GB HDD for my Power Mac G4. I will send it out tomorrow.

My PowerBook's warranty lasts until 2007 Smile Good timing for the Intel x86 based portable Mac Very Happy

Lucky you caught the problem before the drive failed, and that the laptop was still under warranty. Smile

Well, in order to back up my 80GB data from PowerBook, I bought a 200GB HDD for my PowerMac G4 (dual 1.42GHz)

The first 4 partitions are from the original HDD (120GB), and I partitioned the new 200GB into 3 HDDs.

Seems like I have a bit too many partitions Very Happy I may rearrange my partitions when I get my PowerBook back. Perhaps I can put Mac OS X 10.2 "Jaguar", Mac OS X 10.3 "Panther", and Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger" back in different partitions.

I'll agree with that! My PC has three hard disks, but only one partition on each. Smile

Well, it's always a good idea to partition your hard disk. So when one partition screwed or anyway damaged, the other partitions won't get affected. I've experienced the C: drive got damaged a few times (that under Windows), and lucky, I saved all my documents in another partition.

07 Jul, 2005 10:36 pm I got my PowerBook back [sdp=60096]

I got my PowerBook back today!!!

They replaced with a new hard disk (same model) for me.
They also installed Mac OS X 10.3.5 (default) for me. It's under warranty, so I paid nothing for this.

Now, I have quite a few things to do with this new harddrive.
  • Repartition the hard disk.
  • install Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger"

  • importing my settings (bookmarks, calendar, mail rules etc) from .Mac
  • install iWorks' 05

  • install other applications, such as
Photoshop Elements, Microsoft Office v.X, or perhaps I can try NeoOffice/J (aka OpenOffice.org) instead.

Well, my Grumpy reminds me about my copy of Office v.X.

Just to add some good software,
Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC)
NetRestore

Both of those are donateware.

Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) is a powerful for backing up entire HDD (partition), it is a great tool for those who want to upgrade their operating systems or re-partition their HDD.

NetRestore is a similar tool to CCC, but instead of creating back up file in local HDD, it is designed to save the file in the network (another computer).

I can't remember where I get those icons, but from one of the icon sites (for Mac).

To use them, open the new icons you downloaded, Show Info on those, and select the image in the Info window, copy it.
Next select the hard drive, Show Info, then click the icon in the show info window, and paste with the one you like.
